Description The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of Steel and/or Polyethylene pipe and equipment by use of appropriate Acetylene and Electric Arc Welding or Butt Fusion equipment. This position is subject to 24-hour call.

Examples of Duties Preheats and cleans Polyethylene and/or Steel piping; lays out, cuts, and fits materials for welding; selects proper welding heat and appurtenances or type and size of electrodes for correct penetration and strength of welded material. Performs various welding tasks associated with construction, repair and maintenance of gas utility lines and related systems/equipment (such as welding pipe casings, welding vault lids and pipe fittings, welding metal parts together, welding hot gas mains, repairing broken or cracked parts, filling holes, fabricating special parts and apparatus, etc.). Lays out, marks, cuts and welds light and heavy material using arc, acetylene and wire welding equipment; tests welded pipes, parts, and other welding work

Assists in locating and repairing gas lines, meters, valves and related equipment. Fabricates special machinery, polyethylene materials, plastic butt fusion joints on plastic pipe, and apparatus as required by department. Performs flat, vertical and horizontal welding; inspects, brushes, and grinds welds.

Operates, cleans, maintains, and makes minor repairs to a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in construction, maintenance and repair of gas utility systems (which may include a boom truck, dump truck, welding truck, welding machine, cutting torch, arc welder, grinder, vise, pipe locator, valve locator, leak detector, hydraulic squeezer, pipe cutter, pipe threader, boring machine, jackhammer, post hole digger, shovel, mechanic tools, plumbing tools, two-way radio, etc.). Performs electro fusion on polyethylene pipe by use of electro fusion equipment. Checks, maintains, and transports supply of equipment, tools and supplies for use at work sites

Performs annual weld testing as required by the gas department. Prepares and/or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, work orders, and other documents. Receives various forms, reports, work orders, maps, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.

Typical Qualifications High school diploma or GED; supplemented by welding experience, preferably in the maintenanceof gas lines or three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of gas distribution systems; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provide the requisite knowledge and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid driver's license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment.

Must obtain certifications required by the Office of Pipeline Safety within six (6) months of hire. Supplemental Information Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their previous training and experience including a detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers and the dates of employment.
