Job description

At Merrifield Garden Center, we strive to provide an unparalleled selection of the highest quality plants and gardening products. We are dedicated to continuous education and sharing our gardening guidance with employees and customers alike. Founded in 1971, Merrifield Garden Center is a family run, full-service garden center, nursery, and landscaping company with three locations in Northern Virginia and an extended family of over 600 employees.
We are looking for a friendly and reliable person to work as a CDL driver. This position requires a Class A or B CDL driver's license, a safe driving record, at least five years of experience working as a driver, and a Motor Vehicle Report that Merrifield Garden Center approves. More information on the Motor Vehicle Report will be provided during the interview process.
Some of the primary responsibilities include:
  • Conducting daily inspections for company vehicles before departing on a delivery, and ensuring that the vehicle is in good working condition with all safety features working properly.
  • Contacting the customer prior to loading the vehicle to make sure the delivery is ready to be received, and go over any details with the customer.
  • Loading plants and materials onto the truck and making sure that the load is properly secured before departure.
  • Reviewing the delivery ticket before departure to make sure that all items purchased are properly accounted for.
  • Handling plants and materials carefully during loading and unloading to ensure they are not damaged in any way.
  • Coordinating with the delivery dispatcher and delivery manager about which deliveries need to be made that day, and the priority order for those deliveries.
  • Communicating with customers in a courteous, professional and friendly manner.
  • Work in other areas of the nursery as needed, when no deliveries are scheduled.

Both full time and part time positions are available.
The ideal candidate must possess the following:
  • At least three years of experience as a driver of any of the following vehicles: dump trucks, flatbeds, roll-offs, piggyback forklifts, and hauling machinery/equipment
  • A CDL driver's license and a clean driving record
  • Friendly, respectful, professional attitude
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Ability to stand or be physically active for hours at a time
  • Ability to lift and move plants and heavy bagged products
