How much do games designer jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 3, 2026, the average yearly pay for games designer in the United States is $149,118.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $155,000.00 and $155,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What do you do as a game designer?

A game designer creates the concepts, rules, and mechanics of a video game or tabletop game. They develop storylines, design levels, and collaborate with artists and programmers to bring the game to life, often using tools like game engines. Strong creativity, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of game development processes are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Games Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Games Designer, you need a strong grasp of game mechanics, storytelling, and user experience, often supported by a degree in game design or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Unity or Unreal Engine, as well as proficiency in scripting languages like C# or Python, is typically required. Creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving are essential soft skills that set successful designers apart. These abilities ensure compelling, engaging game experiences and effective teamwork throughout the game development process.

What careers are in game design?

Careers in game design include roles such as game designer, level designer, character designer, and game programmer. These positions often require skills in creative thinking, programming, and familiarity with tools like Unity or Unreal Engine. Many roles also involve collaboration with artists, writers, and testers throughout the development process.

What is the difference between Games Designer vs Game Developer?

AspectGames DesignerGame Developer
CredentialsDegree in game design, computer science, or related fieldDegree in computer science, software engineering, or related field
Work EnvironmentCreative teams, design studios, game studiosProgramming teams, software development environments
Industry UsageDesigning game concepts, mechanics, storylinesWriting code, implementing game features, debugging
Common Search IntentUnderstanding design roles, responsibilities, skillsLearning programming, development tools, coding tasks

Games Designers focus on creating the concept, mechanics, and overall experience of a game, working closely with artists and developers. Game Developers primarily write code, implement features, and build the game engine. Both roles collaborate but have distinct responsibilities within the game development process.

How do I get a job as a game designer?

To become a game designer, develop a strong portfolio showcasing your design skills, gain experience through internships or entry-level positions, and learn industry-standard tools like Unity or Unreal Engine. A background in computer science, art, or creative writing can also be beneficial, along with understanding game mechanics and user experience principles.

How do Game Designers typically collaborate with other team members throughout a game's development?

Game Designers work closely with artists, programmers, sound designers, and producers to bring a game's vision to life. They often participate in regular team meetings, provide detailed design documentation, and give feedback on prototypes and builds. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as designers must balance creative ideas with technical constraints and feedback from playtesting. This collaborative environment helps ensure that gameplay mechanics, visuals, and user experience align with the overall project goals.

Will AI replace game designers?

AI is unlikely to fully replace game designers, as their role involves creativity, storytelling, and understanding player experience, which are difficult for AI to replicate. Instead, AI tools can assist designers by automating repetitive tasks and generating ideas, allowing designers to focus on innovation and complex problem-solving. Successful game development continues to rely on human creativity and expertise alongside technological tools.

What are games designers?

Games designers are creative professionals responsible for developing the concepts, rules, storylines, characters, and overall structure of video games or board games. They collaborate with artists, programmers, and writers to bring their ideas to life, ensuring the game is engaging, playable, and enjoyable for users. Games designers often create detailed documentation, prototypes, and design mechanics that shape the player’s experience. Their work involves both creative thinking and technical understanding of game development processes.

Job description

Cat Daddy Games is more than just a mobile video game company; we are a passionate and close-knit family of creators. Based in Kirkland, Washington, we combine our innovative spirit with the support and expertise of Take-Two Interactive to push the boundaries of what's possible in the gaming industry. With our focus on live service projects like WWE SuperCard and NBA 2K Mobile, we constantly strive to deliver engaging and unforgettable moments for our players.

What We Need:

Cat Daddy is seeking a Game Designer to join our team of artists, engineers, and product managers to collaborate on game feature designs and monetization strategies for free-to-play mobile games. The ideal candidate has shipped multiple F2P mobile games in a design role, from concept to live operations.

This is an in-office position, located in Kirkland, WA.

What You Will Do:
  • Design new gameplay experiences including time-limited events, alternative game modes, and mini-games that add variety and excitement to the core game loop.

  • Pitch and prototype creative concepts that align with player motivations, game themes, and business goals.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to balance fun, difficulty, and monetization across your designs.

  • Build and maintain clear documentation, wireframes, and specs to communicate design intent.

  • Analyze player feedback and data to refine designs and identify opportunities for future content.

  • Stay on top of mobile game trends and competitor features to ensure our game remains fresh and competitive.

Who We Think Will be an Excellent Fit:
  • 5+ years of game design experience, with a focus on free-to-play mobile games. Experience designing card-collecting, card-battling, and/or deck-building games is a plus!

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, and/or comparable, relevant work experience.

  • Expert-level understanding of the mobile game landscape from a game design perspective, including game economies, data analysis, and back-end environments.

  • World-class communication skills, with proven ability to produce effective design documentation

  • A great teammate who can collaborate with engineers and artists on game development.

At Cat Daddy, we believe diversity of experience is fundamental to creating accessible and fun gaming experiences for *all* of our players. We encourage everyone to consider being a part of our team.

We are an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, sex, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
