What is a Game Writing Internship?

A Game Writing Internship is a temporary, often entry-level position where aspiring writers gain hands-on experience creating narrative content for video games. Interns may assist in writing dialogue, character backstories, world-building materials, and in-game text under the supervision of experienced game writers or narrative designers. The internship provides exposure to the collaborative process of game development, allowing interns to work closely with designers, artists, and programmers. It also helps build a professional portfolio and industry connections, which can be valuable for pursuing a career in game writing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Game Writing Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Game Writing Intern, you need strong creative writing abilities, an understanding of narrative design, and preferably some coursework or experience in game development or related fields. Familiarity with interactive storytelling tools, scripting languages (like Twine or Ink), and collaborative platforms such as Google Docs or Trello is often expected. Excellent communication, adaptability, and openness to feedback help you work effectively with designers, artists, and developers. These skills ensure you can craft engaging stories that seamlessly integrate with gameplay, enhancing the player's overall experience.

What types of tasks and projects can I expect to work on during a Game Writing Internship?

As a Game Writing Intern, you can expect to contribute to a variety of tasks such as writing dialogue, developing character backstories, assisting with world-building documentation, and helping craft in-game text like item descriptions or quest narratives. You may also participate in brainstorming sessions, collaborate closely with designers and artists, and provide feedback on narrative elements to ensure consistency throughout the game. Interns often gain hands-on experience with collaborative writing tools and version control systems, preparing them for more advanced narrative design roles in the future.
