What are some common challenges faced by game testers, and how can they be effectively addressed?

Game testers often encounter challenges such as repetitive testing tasks, tight deadlines, and the need to identify subtle bugs in complex systems. Staying detail-oriented and maintaining focus during long testing sessions are important for success. Effective communication with developers and other testers also plays a key role in addressing issues quickly. Utilizing bug-tracking tools, following structured testing methodologies, and participating in regular team syncs can help testers manage these challenges and contribute to high-quality game releases.

How do I become a game tester?

To become a game tester, you typically need a strong understanding of video games, attention to detail, and good communication skills. Many testers start with entry-level positions at game development companies or through freelance testing opportunities, and familiarity with testing tools or bug tracking software can be helpful. A high school diploma or equivalent is usually sufficient, though some roles may prefer related experience or certifications in quality assurance.

What is the difference between Game Testing vs Quality Assurance Tester?

Work EnvironmentGame studios, testing labs, remoteGame studios, software companies, remote
Industry UsagePrimarily in gaming industryBroader software and gaming industries

Game Testing and Quality Assurance Tester roles share many skills and environments, but game testing focuses specifically on identifying bugs and gameplay issues, while QA testers oversee broader quality processes. Both roles are essential in game development, with overlapping credentials and work settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Game Tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Game Tester, you need a keen eye for detail, strong analytical abilities, and a basic understanding of game development concepts, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant experience. Familiarity with bug tracking systems (like JIRA), version control tools, and various gaming platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, patience, and problem-solving skills help testers clearly document issues and work effectively with development teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring the quality, playability, and overall success of video games before public release.

What is game testing?

Game testing is the process of playing video games in a structured and systematic way to identify bugs, glitches, and usability issues before the game is released to the public. Game testers work closely with developers to ensure the game functions as intended across different platforms and scenarios. Their work helps improve the overall quality of the game and provides feedback on gameplay, graphics, and user experience. Game testing can be both manual and automated, and it is an essential step in the game development lifecycle.

Job description

At PrizePicks, we are the fastest-growing sports company in North America, as recognized by Inc. 5000. As the leading platform for Daily Fantasy Sports, we cover a diverse range of sports leagues, including the NFL, NBA, and Esports titles like League of Legends and Counter-Strike. Our team of over 550 employees thrives in an inclusive culture that values individuals from diverse backgrounds, regardless of their level of sports fandom. Ready to reimagine the DFS industry together?
As the Director of CRM Marketing at PrizePicks, you will own and lead the end-to-end CRM function, responsible for driving activation, engagement, and retention through targeted, data-driven messaging. This role will define the strategy, execution, and evolution of CRM across key owned channels, ensuring every player interaction is timely, relevant, and impactful.
You will lead a high-performing CRM team and partner cross-functionally with Product, Analytics, Creative, Social, and Revenue Operations to deliver personalized experiences that influence player behavior and maximize lifetime value. This role is less about traditional lifecycle stage management and more focused on real-time, moment-based marketing, segmentation, and behavioral impact.
What you'll do:
Segmentation, Personalization & Targeting
  • Lead the development of advanced segmentation frameworks and targeting logic to deliver highly relevant messaging.
  • Own personalization strategy across channels, leveraging behavioral, transactional, and predictive data.
  • Continuously refine audience strategies to improve engagement, conversion, and retention outcomes.
  • Drive forward real-time messaging capabilities and effectiveness

Campaign Strategy & Channel Optimization
  • Oversee planning and execution of CRM campaigns across all owned channels (email, push, SMS, in-app).
  • Drive channel optimization strategies, ensuring the right message reaches the right player at the right time.
  • Partner with Creative and Brand teams to ensure messaging aligns with voice, tone, and brand standards.

Testing & Experimentation
  • Own the CRM testing roadmap, including A/B and multivariate testing strategies.
  • Establish a culture of experimentation to continuously improve campaign performance and player experience.
  • Leverage insights from testing to inform broader marketing and product strategies.

Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Partner closely with Product and REI teams to support retention and reactivation initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Analytics to define success metrics, measure lift, and identify growth opportunities.
  • Align with broader Marketing (Creative, Social, Product Marketing) to ensure cohesive player communication.

Performance & Impact Measurement
  • Define and track KPIs tied to engagement, participation, retention, and incremental lift.
  • Evaluate CRM effectiveness based on its ability to drive meaningful behavioral change.
  • Provide regular reporting and strategic recommendations to senior leadership.

Team Leadership & Development
  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing CRM team.
  • Establish clear priorities, workflows, and accountability across the function.
  • Foster a data-driven, test-and-learn culture within the team.

What Success Looks Like
  • CRM drives measurable increases in player participation and engagement.
  • Messaging feels personalized, timely, and aligned with player behavior.
  • Strong testing culture leading to continuous performance improvements.
  • Clear demonstration of incremental lift driven by CRM initiatives.
  • Seamless collaboration across Product, Marketing, and Analytics.
What you have:
  • 8-12+ years of experience in CRM, retention, or performance marketing, within gaming, DFS, or sports betting is a plus.
  • Proven experience leading CRM strategy and teams at scale.
  • Deep expertise in segmentation, targeting, and personalization strategies.
  • Strong experience with CRM and marketing automation platforms (Braze highly preferred).
  • Experience in managing a broader CRM tech stack.
  • Demonstrated ability to build testing roadmaps and drive data-informed decision-making.
  • Strong analytical mindset with experience leveraging data to drive marketing performance.
What makes you stand out:
  • Experience working cross-functionally with Product, Analytics, and Marketing teams.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Familiarity with DFS or sports gaming industry strongly preferred.
