What is the difference between Game Programming Internships vs Game Development Internships?

AspectGame Programming InternshipsGame Development Internships
FocusWriting code, developing game mechanics, optimizing performanceDesigning game features, creating assets, overall game design
Skills RequiredProgramming languages (C++, C#), software developmentDesign tools, creativity, understanding of game design principles
Work EnvironmentTypically in software or game studios, coding teamsDesign teams, collaborative environments, cross-disciplinary roles

Game Programming Internships focus on coding and technical development, while Game Development Internships encompass broader design and creative tasks. Both roles often overlap but target different skill sets within the game industry.

What are game programming internships?

Game programming internships are temporary positions within video game development companies that allow students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in programming for games. Interns typically work alongside experienced developers, contributing to coding, debugging, and developing gameplay features or tools. These internships provide valuable exposure to industry-standard software, workflows, and collaborative environments, helping interns build their portfolios and professional networks. They are an excellent way for aspiring game programmers to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Game Programming Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Game Programming Intern, you generally need a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, programming languages like C++ or C#, and coursework or experience in game development. Familiarity with game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine, source control systems like Git, and a portfolio of game projects are typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, adaptability, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing effectively to development teams, learning quickly, and making a meaningful impact on game projects.

What kinds of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a game programming internship?

As a game programming intern, you'll typically assist with tasks such as debugging code, creating or refining gameplay features, and collaborating with designers and artists to implement new mechanics. You may also be involved in optimizing game performance, writing scripts for game events, or supporting the QA team in identifying and fixing bugs. Interns often work closely with experienced programmers, gaining insight into the full development cycle and contributing to both small and large-scale projects. This hands-on experience is valuable for building your portfolio and understanding real-world workflows in a game studio.

Job description

Description:Launch Your Civilian Career with a DoD SkillBridge Internship at IE!

Intermountain Electronics (IE) is proud to support transitioning service members through the Department of War SkillBridge Program. We offer hands-on internship opportunities designed to bridge the gap between military service and civilian employment. Interns gain meaningful experience in high-demand industries while working alongside our talented professionals in a supportive, growth-focused environment.

Why SkillBridge with IE?

At IE, we do more than build equipmentโ€”we power industries and careers. Interns will work in a fast-paced, innovative setting, contributing to projects that support data centers, mining, power utilities, oil & gas, and industrial sectors across North America.

Hereโ€™s what you can expect:

  • Industry-recognized experience in manufacturing, engineering, and operations
  • Professional development and exposure to cutting-edge equipment and processes
  • Strong potential for post-internship employment
  • A culture that values your military background and work ethic

About IE

Intermountain Electronics is a leading provider of custom-engineered Process, Electrical Control, and Power Distribution solutions. Our work ranges from massive power systems to precision-built componentsโ€”all manufactured right here in the U.S. We pride ourselves on quality, innovation, and our team-first culture.

Our Culture

We work hard, solve complex problems, and celebrate wins together. At IE, youโ€™ll join a close-knit crew of driven, skilled, and down-to-earth people who love what they do. Weโ€™re building the infrastructure that powers the worldโ€”and weโ€™re having fun doing it.

Current SkillBridge Internship Tracks:

We offer internship opportunities across all four IE locations:

Price, Utah Denver, Colorado South Point, Ohio Centralia, Illinois

Available internship tracks include:

  • Electrical Technician
  • Mechanical/Electrical Engineering
  • Metal Fabrication & Welding
  • Project Management
  • Quality Inspector
  • Mechanical Assembly
  • Industrial Painting

Flexible Program Options

IE understands that every service memberโ€™s transition looks a little different. Thatโ€™s why we offer SkillBridge opportunities ranging from 60 to 180 days, depending on your availability and goals. We're continuously expanding our internship offerings and exploring new tracks that align with the skills and experiences of transitioning military members. If you donโ€™t see a program that matches your background, reach out โ€” we may have additional opportunities in development.

Requirements:Weโ€™re looking for service members who bring more than just military experienceโ€”weโ€™re looking for drive, ambition, and the motivation to show up every day ready to learn and contribute.

While some technical skills may be required depending on the track, what matters just as much is who you are. If youโ€™re someone who takes pride in their work, strives to get better every day, and wants to be part of a team that shares that mindsetโ€”we can teach you the rest.

Our SkillBridge program is fast-paced, hands-on, and designed for those ready to hit the ground running. We wonโ€™t sugarcoat it: our culture is demanding. But for those with the right attitude, work ethic, and willingness to grow, the opportunities here are wide open.

Eligibility:

  • Must be active-duty military and approved to participate in DoD SkillBridge
  • Must have 60โ€“180 days remaining in service at time of internship start
  • Relevant military experience not required but a strong plus
  • Willingness to learn, collaborate, and bring your A-game every day
