What Does a Game Master Do?

A game master or gamemaster oversees gameplay during a multiplayer video game, role-playing game, or another type of contest. Some employers refer to this position as a GM. Your duties include ensuring that all players follow the rules during the game. You organize gameplay and make sure that players know the rules before they join the contest. You officiate during the game, correct rule breaches when necessary, and moderate when disputes arise. You perform your responsibilities in person for live-action role-playing games and on a computer during video games. Attractions like escape rooms also have game masters.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Game Master, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Game Master, you need a deep understanding of game rules, storytelling abilities, and strong organizational skills, often supported by experience with various tabletop or online game systems. Familiarity with digital platforms like Roll20, Discord, or Foundry VTT, as well as any system-specific rulebooks or guides, is commonly required. Creativity, adaptability, and effective communication help a Game Master engage players and manage group dynamics. This teamwork is essential to maintaining a positive and immersive experience for the gaming community.

What are Game Masters?
