POSITION OVERVIEW

The Upper School Permanent Substitute Teacher and Coach is a vital member of the Westminster community, supporting the academic and athletic programs throughout the school year. This position is designed for an adaptable, student-centered educator who thrives in a collaborative, mission-driven environment and is committed to fostering intellectual growth, inclusivity, and holistic development.

Reporting to the Upper School Division Head, the individual in this role provides consistent instructional support by serving as a substitute teacher across all academic disciplines, ensuring continuity of learning when primary teachers are absent. In addition to managing daily substitute coordination and related communication with faculty and staff, the role includes general supervisory responsibilities for the Upper School and active participation in student life.

This position also plays an integral role in Westminster’s athletics program, coaching for at least two seasons at the varsity or sub-varsity level and handling additional game management responsibilities. Supervisor: Head of Upper School

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Position Status:  Salaried, Exempt, Full-time, 10-month 

Work Hours: Typical hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Weekend and evening work will be required. 

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for a successful candidate.

• An undergraduate degree is required; a degree in education or a related field is preferred
• Direct classroom experience is preferred
• Prior experience working with students in an academic or athletic setting
• Significant experience coaching athletes and working with athletic teams and staff
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Commitment to supporting Westminster’s mission and values, with a dedication to fostering a diverse and inclusive community

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provides substitute coverage, instruction, and supervision as needed for Upper School classes and events when the primary teacher is unavailable
• Manages scheduling of and communication with daily substitute teachers and primary classroom teachers, coordinating with the Upper School Registrar
• Assists with coaching two sports at the varsity or sub-varsity level (assignments based on experience and department needs and include summer responsibilities).
• Creates and promotes an inclusive learning environment
• Plans and leads practice sessions in alignment with the philosophy and goals of the Athletics Department.
• Mentors student-athletes in both skill development and personal growth, emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, and integrity.
• Assists in event-day logistics, including supervision, equipment management, and transportation coordination as needed.
• Serves as a Game Manager for 1 season, specific assignment made by the Director of Athletics.
• Perform other duties as assigned 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; talk and hear; engage in moderately strenuous physical activity both indoors and out. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to become certified in CPR, AED, and First Aid is required.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee may occasionally be exposed to outside weather conditions and frequently walk on slippery or uneven surfaces.  The noise level in the work environment is often loud.

Westminster is a drug-free, smoke/vape-free campus.

TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local during the regular business day.  Overnight and out-of-area travel may also be required, mainly associated with planned events, conferences, and professional development opportunities.

Driving a Westminster vehicle may be required for this position.
