What does a Game Director do?

A Game Director oversees the development of a video game, guiding creative vision, managing teams, and ensuring the project meets quality and deadline standards. They coordinate between designers, artists, programmers, and producers, often making high-level decisions and setting project goals. Strong leadership, communication skills, and experience with game development tools are essential for this role.

What is a Game Director?

A Game Director is the lead creative authority on a video game project, responsible for shaping the overall vision and direction of the game. They oversee the design, story, gameplay mechanics, and coordinate teams across art, programming, and production to ensure the project stays on track. Game Directors make high-level decisions, solve complex problems, and ensure the final product aligns with both creative goals and business objectives. They play a key role in maintaining the game's quality and cohesiveness throughout development.

Can video games lower cortisol?

As a Game Director, understanding how video games impact players' stress levels is important. Some studies suggest that engaging in certain video games can reduce cortisol, a stress hormone, by providing relaxation or distraction. However, effects vary depending on game type and individual response, and more research is needed to confirm consistent benefits.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Game Director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Game Director, you need deep experience in game design, project management, and a strong understanding of the gaming industry, often backed by a degree in game development or a related field. Familiarity with game engines (such as Unity or Unreal Engine), production pipelines, and agile project management tools is typically required. A Game Director works closely with leads from art, design, programming, audio, and production teams to ensure the game’s vision is consistently realized throughout development. They facilitate regular cross-departmental meetings, provide feedback, and help resolve creative or technical conflicts. This collaborative approach helps align all departments with the project’s goals, streamlines decision-making, and fosters a unified direction for the game. Effective communication and leadership are crucial, as the Game Director must balance creative inspiration with practical constraints.

About the team and role

Global Gaming Team

GBG’s Global Gaming team partners with leading operators, platforms, and technology providers across online gaming and sports betting worldwide. We help customers navigate complex regulatory environments, mitigate fraud, verify identity with confidence, and deliver secure, trusted player experiences at scale.

This is a high-growth team operating in a fast-moving, highly regulated industry where innovation, trust, and compliance are critical to success.

The Role - Acccount Manager, Gaming

Working closely with the Global Gaming Director, this role is responsible for driving meaningful revenue growth across a portfolio of GBG’s Gaming clients. You will act as a strategic partner to customers, expanding existing relationships while identifying and closing new revenue opportunities through upsell, cross‑sell, and the introduction of additional GBG solutions. This position plays a key role in strengthening long‑term client partnerships and maximizing the commercial impact of GBG’s identity, fraud, and trust offerings within the gaming sector.

What you will do

  • Deliver an exceptional client experience by partnering with Gaming customers to solve business challenges, address evolving requirements, and unlock new opportunities.
  • Clearly articulate the value and commercial impact of GBG’s full portfolio of identity, fraud, and trust solutions.
  • Lead and grow GBG’s largest Identity accounts, providing strategic direction and sales engagement support across complex opportunities.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, engaging stakeholders at both strategic and operational levels.
  • Collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams—including Product, Customer Success, Pre‑Sales, and Marketing—to ensure customer and sector insights inform the product roadmap.
  • Partner with Legal to support contract negotiations and successfully close commercial agreements.
  • Play a key role in developing and executing account strategies to meet and exceed revenue targets.
  • Represent GBG at industry events, conferences, and association meetings, sharing market insights and emerging trends with internal stakeholders.
  • Drive sustainable growth by expanding revenue, increasing account value, and improving overall margin across the Gaming portfolio.

Requirements

Skills we are looking for

  • Ability to develop and execute a robust account strategy and pipeline that supports commercial objectives, from opportunity identification through qualification, close, and expansion.
  • Proven strategic sales experience, consistently delivering double‑digit revenue growth through a consultative, value‑led approach.
  • Demonstrated success managing complex, multi‑level client relationships across C‑suite, commercial, and technical stakeholders.
  • Strong consultative skills, with the ability to understand customer requirements, challenges, and business objectives and translate them into clear, compelling value propositions.
  • Experience maintaining accurate pipeline, forecasting, and activity reporting to support commercial decision‑making.
  • Ability to advise on and support the execution of tactical marketing initiatives within the gaming or regulated technology sector.
  • Solid understanding of the online gambling and identity verification landscape, or closely related regulated markets.
  • Proven track record of growing and expanding revenue across large, enterprise‑level accounts.
  • High energy, resilience, and drive, with a demonstrated history of exceeding performance expectations.
  • Strong ability to simplify and present complex technical solutions in a clear, customer‑centric manner.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to thrive in a dynamic, team‑oriented environment.
  • Strong commercial acumen and business judgment, paired with initiative and a solutions‑oriented approach to overcoming obstacles.
