How much do fusion welding jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 24, 2026, the average hourly pay for fusion welding in the United States is $23.26, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.51 and $26.20 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is fusion welding?

A Fusion Welding job involves joining two or more metal pieces by melting their edges and allowing them to fuse together as they cool. Welders use various techniques such as arc welding, MIG welding, and TIG welding to achieve strong and durable joints. This job requires knowledge of welding processes, safety protocols, and material properties. Fusion welders work in industries like construction, manufacturing, and automotive. Skilled welders must read blueprints, operate welding equipment, and ensure weld quality through inspections.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for fusion welding?

To thrive in Fusion Welding, you need strong manual dexterity, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of welding techniques and metallurgy, typically backed by vocational training or certification such as AWS (American Welding Society) credentials. Experience using various welding equipment (arc, MIG, TIG) and safety systems is essential. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and the ability to follow precise instructions distinguish top performers in this field. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing safe, high-quality welds and ensuring workplace safety and efficiency.

What are the typical work environments or industries for fusion welders?

Fusion welders can find employment in a wide range of industries, including construction, manufacturing, automotive, shipbuilding, aerospace, and energy sectors such as oil and gas or power plants. Depending on the employer, welders may work indoors in fabrication shops or outdoors on construction sites, and might be required to work at heights or in confined spaces. Work is often project-based, sometimes requiring overtime or shift work to meet deadlines. Safety is a priority in all environments, with strict adherence to regulations and personal protective equipment (PPE). Gaining experience in various settings can help welders advance to supervisory, inspection, or specialized welding roles.

What does a fusion welder do?

A fusion welder joins metal parts by melting and fusing them together using high heat, often with specialized equipment like plasma or arc welders. They work in manufacturing, construction, or repair environments, requiring knowledge of welding techniques, safety protocols, and sometimes certifications such as AWS or ASME. Their tasks include preparing materials, setting up equipment, and inspecting welds for quality.
