Work Location: MEADOWBROOK ELEMENTARY

City: FT LAUDERDALE

POSITION GOAL

To provide the highest quality care and supervision to students in the Broward County School System by providing classroom supports that enhance the instructional process. Also, plays a vital role in the instructional process of an individualized program of education.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Instructional Assistant shall carry out the performance responsibilities listed below.
• Work under the direct supervision of a teacher in the creation of instructional materials.
• Work under the supervision of a teacher or administrator to provide for the safety and welfare of students by supervising and escorting
students throughout the school as required.
• Provide classroom-related clerical support as needed such as daily notes, student folders, and data collection.
• Prepare and use instructional materials and teaching aids under the direction of the teacher.
• Engage in general housekeeping activities to keep the classroom safe and free of obstructions.
• Assist with lunchroom activities and dine with students as needed.
• Assist in supervising nap and rest periods as needed.
• Assist in providing care for children when the teacher is not present for a period not to exceed 30 minutes. (this is not to include
substitute teaching)
• Construct and design specific items for tests and worksheets when provided with the guidelines by the teacher.
• Follow-up lessons presented by the teacher when provided with guidelines by the teacher.
• Supervise small group discussions and activities among students.
• Assist individual students as assigned by the teacher.
• Utilize programs with groups of students.
• Perform daily living activities which may include but is not limited to:

o Assisting with personal hygiene and restroom functions, which may include diapering or catheterization.
o Providing mobility assistance including lifting, positioning, or transferring students.
o Assisting with feeding needs.
o Assisting with adaptive equipment needs.
o Providing behavioral assistance, which may include implementing PBIP and positive crisis management (PCM) skills.

• Perform and promote all activities in compliance with the equal employment and non-discrimination policies of The School Board of
   Broward County, Florida.
• Participate in training programs offered to enhance the individual skills and proficiency related to job responsibilities.
• Review current developments, literature, and technical sources of information related to job responsibilities.
• Ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures.
• Follow federal and state, as well as School Board policies.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or designee

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • A standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Education Development (GED) testing program.
  • The ability to interact and communicate effectively with children.
  • Computer skills required as needed for the position.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Successful completion of the Principal of Teaching formerly known as Teacher Assisting Curriculum at the designated technical
college in the Broward County School District.
OR
• Achieving a passing score on the ParaPro Test, or other officially sanctioned standard tests, to demonstrate the ability to assist in
instructing reading/language arts, writing, and mathematics; or reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as
appropriate.
OR
• An earned associate degree from an accredited institution, or at least 60 semester hours of earned college credit from an accredited
institution.
And
• Bilingual skills.

SIGNIFICANT CONTACTS-frequency, contact, purpose

On a daily basis, works with assigned classroom teacher(s) and classroom students(s) to support high-quality and effective instructional
and behavioral program delivery to students. Also, provides assistance, care, and supervision to students. Frequently interacts with
other personnel within the assigned school in performing daily work routine. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the district’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of
employment shall be those established by the School Board.
