How much do funder jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for funder in Texas is $18.05, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.67 and $20.14 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a funder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Funder, you need strong financial analysis, risk assessment, and decision-making skills, often supported by a background in finance, business, or economics. Familiarity with loan origination systems, credit evaluation software, and relevant regulations or certifications such as CFA may be required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to build trust with clients and stakeholders are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies are critical to ensuring sound lending decisions, regulatory compliance, and positive client relationships.

What is a funder?

A funder, sometimes called an angel investor, is a wealthy individual or organization that provides financial backing for projects or business ventures. As a funder, you can offer financial support through a grant, an investment, or a loan. You may provide capital in exchange for ownership equity or convertible debt. In this career, your job duties include determining the qualifications for a recipient to get your funding and meeting with grant professionals or business leaders to hear their pitches for nonprofit projects or business ventures. You need good interpersonal and decision-making skills to be an effective funder.

What is the difference between Funder vs Grant Writer?

AspectFunderGrant Writer
Primary RoleProvides funding or financial support to projects or organizationsPrepares and writes grant proposals to secure funding
Required CredentialsMay include financial expertise or industry-specific knowledgeTypically requires writing skills and knowledge of grant processes
Work EnvironmentFunding organizations, foundations, corporationsNonprofits, educational institutions, government agencies
Industry UsageFunding sources and recipientsGrant application and proposal development

While a Funder provides the financial resources needed for projects, a Grant Writer focuses on creating compelling proposals to secure those funds. Both roles are essential in the funding process but serve different functions within the funding ecosystem.

What are some common challenges funders face when evaluating grant proposals, and how can they be addressed?

Funders often encounter challenges such as assessing the long-term impact of projects, ensuring proposals align with their mission, and fairly comparing applications from diverse organizations. Balancing objectivity while considering qualitative factors can be difficult. To address these challenges, funders typically use standardized evaluation criteria, seek input from subject-matter experts, and conduct thorough due diligence to ensure transparency and consistency in their decision-making process.

Job description

Your opportunity

At Schwab, youโ€™re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us โ€œchallenge the status quoโ€ and transform the finance industry together.

We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location(s).

The Treasury Corporate Finance team is responsible for supporting Schwabโ€™s overall balance sheet strategy with an emphasis on capital management and funding. As the Director of Funding, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and sustaining the firmโ€™s funding strategy across the corporation and its subsidiaries.  This role sits at the intersection of financial analysis, capital markets, and strategic decision-makingโ€”where your work directly supports our ability to effectively and efficiently fund and manage our balance sheet from a position of safety and soundness.

Reporting to the Managing Director, Head of Treasury Corporate Finance, this role serves as a senior position within the Treasury Corporate Finance team.  You will play a key role in establishment and maintenance of funding programs across legal entities, developing and executing a holistic funding and liability management plan, including the planning and execution of debt and capital issuances, and maintaining a forward-thinking perspective on ways to expand and optimize our funding and capital markets capabilities.  From analyzing current and prospective funding needs, performing comprehensive financial analysis to assess the implications of different alternatives, to leading the execution of funding capital markets transactions, this role has a high level of visibility and autonomy to drive favorable outcomes for Schwab.

In this role you will also be responsible for maintaining strong relationships with key outside stakeholders, including:

  • Investment Banking Partners โ€“ Active engagement with investment banking partners, particularly with regard to dealer selection and issuance planning and execution.
  • Fixed Income Investors - Serve as the primary liaison with Schwabโ€™s current and prospective fixed income investor base. This includes leading Schwabโ€™s fixed income marking program, which will include periodic engagement with fixed income investors both virtually as well as in-person through conferences and โ€œroad showโ€ interactions.
  • Rating Agencies โ€“ Serve as the primary point of contact with rating agencies, including maintaining a robust understanding of rating agency methodologies and the impacts that planned and potential funding actions and other balance sheet / performance optimization initiatives may have on Schwabโ€™s ratings.

Success in this role requires proven success in the funding and capital markets space, including demonstrated experience with developing a funding plan, leading key funding- and capital-related transactions, along with strong critical thinking and communication skills. This role requires flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to take on new challenges as the organization continues to transform and as responsibilities evolve over time to meet changing business needs.

Scope & Ways of Working

  • Operate as a hands-on analytical leader, owning complex deliverables end-to-end
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to influence outcomes without direct authority
  • Continuously improve processes, methodologies / analytical approaches, and controls
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability as priorities, market conditions, business needs, and regulatory expectations evolve
  • Approach problem-solving with strong attention to detail, structured thinking, and resilience
What you have

Required:

  • 8+ years relevant experience with an emphasis on a mix of the following:
    • leading key funding desk activities (e.g., issuance / redemption, share repurchase, other capital markets transactions)
    • corporate finance / analytical assessments
    • assessing potential new funding channels
  • 2+ years of direct people management experience, including proven ability to coach, develop and build a high-performing team
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree
  • Strong knowledge of debt capital markets and related financial and accounting topics
  • Strong experience developing and delivering presentations on complex topics to senior/executive leaders
  • Multiple experiences successfully engaging with key external stakeholders
  • Proven ability to operate effectively in ambiguity and drive results with persistence and ownership
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into clear insights
  • Proficiency in AI, data analytics, and large enterprise databases

Preferred:

  • Masterโ€™s degree or CFA

Whatโ€™s in it for you

At Schwab, youโ€™re empowered to shape your future. We champion your growth through meaningful work, continuous learning, and a culture of trust and collaborationโ€”so you can build the skills to make a lasting impact. Our Hybrid Work and Flexibility approach balances our ongoing commitment to workplace flexibility, serving our clients, and our strong belief in the value of being together in person on a regular basis.

We offer a competitive benefits package that takes care of the whole you โ€“ both today and in the future:

  • 401(k) with company match and Employee stock purchase plan
  • Paid time for vacation, volunteering, and 28-day sabbatical after every 5 years of service for eligible positions
  • Paid parental leave and family building benefits
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
