What is a functional test engineer?

Functional Test Engineers are professionals responsible for designing, executing, and maintaining tests that verify the functionality of software applications or systems. They ensure that all features and requirements specified by stakeholders work as expected by creating test cases and scripts, performing manual or automated tests, and documenting results. Their work helps identify defects or inconsistencies early in the development process, contributing to higher quality products. Functional Test Engineers often collaborate with software developers, QA teams, and project managers to resolve issues and improve overall system reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional test engineer?

To thrive as a Functional Test Engineer, you need strong analytical skills, knowledge of software testing methodologies, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test management tools (like JIRA or TestRail), automated testing frameworks, and certifications such as ISTQB are commonly expected. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure that software products meet quality standards and requirements, leading to reliable and successful project outcomes.

What are some common challenges functional test engineers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Functional Test Engineers often work closely with developers, business analysts, and product managers to ensure software meets requirements. A common challenge is effectively communicating test results and requirements across diverse teams, especially when priorities or technical understanding differ. Balancing thorough testing with tight project deadlines can also be demanding, requiring strong organizational and negotiation skills. Being proactive in fostering collaboration and clarity helps Functional Test Engineers bridge gaps and drive quality outcomes.

What is the difference between Functional Test Engineer vs Manual Tester?

AspectFunctional Test EngineerManual Tester
Primary FocusDesigning and executing functional test cases to verify software featuresExecuting test cases manually to identify bugs and issues
Required SkillsKnowledge of testing tools, scripting, understanding of software requirementsAttention to detail, understanding of testing processes, basic technical skills
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams, QA departments, automation integrationQA teams, software projects, often in manual testing phases
CertificationsISTQB, ISTQB Agile, or similar testing certificationsISTQB Foundation, basic testing certifications often preferred

While both roles focus on testing software, the Functional Test Engineer typically involves designing comprehensive functional tests and may include automation, whereas the Manual Tester primarily executes tests manually to find bugs. The Functional Test Engineer often requires more technical skills and scripting knowledge, making it suitable for environments emphasizing automated testing and detailed functional validation.

Job description

ABOUT FIREFLY AEROSPACE

Firefly Aerospace is a space and defense technology company that enables our world to launch, land, and operate in space โ€“ anywhere, anytime. As the partner of choice for critical space missions, Firefly is the only commercial company to launch a satellite to orbit with 24-hour notice and the only company to achieve a successful Moon landing. Our launch vehicles, lunar landers, and orbital vehicles provide government and commercial customers with full mission services from low Earth orbit to the Moon and beyond. Headquartered in North Austin, Texas, Firefly is looking for passionate, hardworking innovators to join our team and help fuel our successful trajectory into space.

SUMMARY

We are seeking a Spacecraft Functional Test Engineer II to join our Assembly, Test and Launch Operations (ATLO) organization and play a key role in verifying spacecraft performance from integration through launch. As part of the spacecraft test team, you will develop and execute functional test campaigns that validate system and subsystem performance, ensuring each vehicle is flight-ready. This is a handsโ€‘on, highly crossโ€‘functional role that blends test architecture design, softwareโ€‘driven test execution, and realโ€‘time problem solving during vehicle integration and environmental testing.

Youโ€™ll work closely with subsystem design teams to define test requirements, develop test scripts and procedures, and build automation that enables repeatable, highโ€‘throughput testing across multiple spacecraft programs. This position is ideal for engineers who thrive in dynamic environments, enjoy working across hardware and software boundaries, and are passionate about building reliable spacecraft through disciplined testing.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and execute spacecraft functional and systemโ€‘level test procedures to verify vehicle performance and mission readiness.
  • Design and maintain automated test scripts, configurations, and architectures to support efficient test execution across multiple programs.
  • Collaborate with subsystem responsible engineers and chief engineers to define test requirements and ensure traceability to verification objectives.
  • Support Hardwareโ€‘inโ€‘theโ€‘Loop (HWIL) testbed development and maintenance, including defining configurations and integrating hardware/software interfaces.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot test results, identifying issues and driving root cause resolution across subsystems.
  • Plan and support test operations in cleanroom, environmental, and launch site environments.
  • Contribute to data management, telemetry visualization, and results analysis to ensure comprehensive verification and documentation.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts to streamline test processes, increase automation, and enhance test reliability.
  • Support the development of tools, dashboards, and analytics for test performance tracking and dataโ€‘driven decision making.
QUALIFICATIONS Basic
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in spacecraft, aerospace, or complex electromechanical system test environments.
  • Handsโ€‘on experience developing or executing functional or systemโ€‘level test procedures.
  • Familiarity with test automation frameworks and scripting languages (e.g., Python, C++, or similar).
  • Working knowledge of hardware/software interfaces, data acquisition, and telemetry systems.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to work across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fastโ€‘paced, collaborative environment supporting multiple spacecraft programs.
Desired
  • Experience with spacecraftโ€‘level testing, including powerโ€‘on, system checkout, and mission simulation campaigns.
  • Familiarity with Hardwareโ€‘inโ€‘theโ€‘Loop (HWIL) systems, EGSE design, or simulation environments.
  • Experience supporting transition from prototype to productionโ€‘style test operations.
  • Background in test data visualization or analytics (e.g., Power BI, Grafana, or custom dashboards).
  • Knowledge of software development practices, including version control, code review, and basic code readability.
  • Familiarity with continuous improvement and process optimization principles applied to test operations.
  • Experience with environmental test coordination, launch campaign support, or postโ€‘environmental functional testing.

Firefly offers outstanding benefits for our employees, including generous health, dental and vision plans with low plan deductibles, parental leave, educational reimbursement, shortโ€‘term disability, and flexible PTO options.

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. ยงโ€ฏ1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
