What is functional nutrition?

Functional nutrition is an approach to health that focuses on using food as medicine to address the root causes of health issues, rather than just treating symptoms. It considers each person's unique body, lifestyle, and environment to create personalized nutrition plans. Functional nutritionists often look at factors like genetics, gut health, and inflammation to recommend dietary changes and supplements. This holistic method aims to improve overall well-being and prevent chronic diseases.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional nutritionist?

To thrive as a Functional Nutritionist, you need a solid background in nutrition science, biochemistry, and holistic health, often supported by a degree in nutrition or dietetics and relevant certifications such as CNS or RD. Familiarity with nutritional assessment tools, client management software, and functional lab testing is important for effective practice. Outstanding interpersonal communication, active listening, and motivational skills help build trust and empower clients to make sustainable lifestyle changes. These competencies enable Functional Nutritionists to provide tailored, evidence-informed guidance that addresses the root causes of health issues and improves client outcomes.

What are some common challenges functional nutritionists face when working with clients, and how can they effectively address them?

Functional nutritionists often encounter challenges such as clients' reluctance to change long-standing dietary habits, difficulty in interpreting complex lab data, and the need to personalize nutrition plans for unique health concerns. To address these challenges, successful practitioners build strong communication skills, stay updated on the latest research, and collaborate closely with other healthcare professionals. Continuing education and mentorship also help in developing strategies to motivate clients and integrate holistic, evidence-based approaches for better outcomes.

What is the difference between Functional Nutrition vs Nutritionist?

AspectFunctional NutritionNutritionist

Work EnvironmentPrivate practice, clinics, wellness centersHospitals, clinics, private practice
Industry UsageHolistic health, integrative medicineGeneral health, diet planning

Nutritionists provide general dietary advice and support overall health. While both work in health and wellness settings, their approaches and credentials differ.

What can you do with a functional nutrition certification?

A functional nutrition certification qualifies individuals to work as nutritionists or health coaches, providing personalized dietary and lifestyle advice to improve clients' overall health. Certified professionals often work in private practice, wellness centers, or healthcare settings, utilizing knowledge of nutrition science, assessment tools, and client education. This certification enhances credibility and expands career opportunities in holistic health and preventive care.

What degree do you need to be a functional nutritionist?

To become a functional nutritionist, a common requirement is a bachelor's degree in nutrition, dietetics, or a related health field. Many practitioners also pursue advanced certifications or a master's degree in functional or integrative nutrition to enhance their credentials and expertise.

Job description

Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) Opportunity

Simplex Health is seeking a Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) to provide telehealth outpatient nutrition counseling in an integrative/functional nutrition setting. This is a PRN (as-needed) role requiring a minimum of 12 hours of weekly availability, with the opportunity to offer additional hours if desired. The ideal candidate has experience in clinical or outpatient nutrition counseling, is licensed (or eligible for licensure) in Pennsylvania, and is passionate about delivering personalized, root-cause care to support long-term health outcomes.

Our Mission: Radically improve the health of Humankind-one person, one appointment, one connection at a time.

At Simplex Health, we do things differently. Our insurance-funded medical nutrition therapy goes beyond symptom management to improve—and in many cases reverse—chronic conditions. We partner with hospitals, healthcare practices, and individuals to provide personalized, root-cause nutrition care across a wide range of conditions, including metabolic health, digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, and chronic disease.

Our approach is grounded in prevention, root-cause resolution, and sustainable lifestyle change, supporting patients throughout their health journey. Through a fully virtual, telehealth model, we meet patients where they are, delivering accessible, high-quality care.

Our evidence-based, progressive nutrition interventions are tailored to each patient's unique biochemistry. Through nutrition counseling, education, and health coaching, we empower patients to improve their health, build lasting habits, and achieve meaningful, long-term outcomes.

Role Details:

  • Location: Telehealth
  • Reports to: Clinical Manager
  • Schedule: PRN / flexible with consistent weekly availability
  • Compensation: $54 to $59 hourly

You love helping people heal. You just don't love doing it all alone.

If you've ever run (or dreamed of running) your own private practice, you know what it takes—the marketing, the scheduling, the billing, the insurance headaches, the empty calendar days, the tech issues, the isolation…

At Simplex Health, you get the best parts of private practice—the autonomy, the flexibility, the deep 1:1 relationships with patients—without the burnout or business stress.

Here, you get to focus on what you do best: helping patients transform their health through integrative and functional nutrition.

  • Communicate openly and effectively to resolve work-related issues and support team outcomes
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative team environment and ongoing clinical initiatives
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and clinical standards
  • Stay current with emerging research and best practices in nutrition and health
  • Manage a full and consistent patient caseload, ensuring timely follow-ups, continuity of care, and optimal patient outcomes

What to Expect At Simplex Health, you'll have access to:

  • Structured onboarding and training
  • Regular case reviews and clinical collaboration
  • Real-time support via team chat and peer connection
  • Team meetings and shared learning opportunities
  • Opportunities to contribute to committees, resources, and clinical initiatives
  • Credentialing: If you're not yet in-network, our team fully manages the insurance credentialing process on your behalf, including covering all associated fees and handling the paperwork.

Benefits

  • Flexible Scheduling: Set your availability with the ability to build and adjust your schedule based on your preferences and patient demand
  • Supplement Commissions: Earn 12.5% of MSRP on supplements purchased through Fullscript. Commissions are paid quarterly and can meaningfully increase your overall earnings based on patient engagement.
