Job Summary:

The Staff Accountant performs a variety of accounting support functions related to accounts payable, banking transactions, journal entries, and general financial recordkeeping. This position is responsible for timely vendor payments, maintaining accurate accounting records, processing banking activities, and serving as backup for payroll processing. The Staff Accountant helps ensure the accuracy and efficiency of daily accounting operations while supporting the Finance team and maintaining strong internal controls.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Process accounts payable, including invoice review, coding, approvals, and payment processing.
  • Maintain vendor files and ensure timely payment of invoices.
  • Process electronic payments, ACH transactions, wire transfers, and check disbursements.
  • Prepare bank deposits and accurately record cash receipts.
  • Perform daily banking activities, including account balancing and transaction verification.
  • Prepare routine journal entries and assist with general ledger maintenance.
  • Reconcile assigned bank accounts, vendor accounts, and other balance sheet accounts.
  • Assist with month-end close by preparing reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Maintain organized accounting records and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with employee reimbursements, expense reports, and other disbursement activities.
  • Provide backup support for payroll processing, including timesheet review, payroll data entry, and payroll verification.
  • Assist with annual audits by providing requested documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, accounting procedures, and internal controls.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows and efficiency.
  • Responsible for filing and document management.
  • Additional duties as requested by the Accounting Manager.

Position Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in finance/accounting or relevant equivalent experience.
  • Experience: Two to three years of experience in an accounting position preferred. Payroll and healthcare experience is a plus.
  • Must maintain a high standard of performance and have the ability to learn new tasks associated with the job.
  • Must maintain a high level of communication with staff members, and a high level of confidentiality.
  • Must work well independently and under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Must have proficiency in computer skills including, but not limited to email functions, spreadsheets, and Word.
  • Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching.
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment.
  • Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriately.
  • May require occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
