What is the difference between Fulltime Designer vs Freelance Designer?

AspectFulltime DesignerFreelance Designer
Employment StatusEmployed by a single companySelf-employed, works for multiple clients
Work EnvironmentOffice or remote company settingIndependent, varies by project
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in design or related fieldMay or may not require formal credentials
Work ScheduleRegular hours, full-time commitmentFlexible hours, project-based

Fulltime Designers are employed by a company with a steady schedule and benefits, focusing on long-term projects. Freelance Designers work independently, managing multiple clients with flexible hours. Both roles require strong design skills, but employment structure and work environment differ significantly.

How does a fulltime designer typically collaborate with other departments in a company?

Fulltime Designers often work closely with teams such as marketing, product management, and development to ensure their designs align with business objectives and technical requirements. Collaboration usually involves participating in brainstorming sessions, presenting design concepts, and incorporating feedback from various stakeholders. Regular communication and iterative feedback loops are essential, as designers must balance creative vision with practical constraints. This cross-functional teamwork helps deliver cohesive and effective visual solutions across projects.

What is a fulltime designer?

Fulltime designers are creative professionals who work on a permanent, salaried basis for a company or organization, rather than as freelancers or on short-term contracts. They are responsible for developing visual concepts and designs across various mediums, such as digital, print, or product design, depending on the industry. Fulltime designers typically work as part of a creative team, collaborating with other departments to ensure consistent branding and effective communication through visual elements. Their roles may include tasks like creating graphics, layouts, user interfaces, and marketing materials.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fulltime designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fulltime Designer, you need strong visual design skills, proficiency in design principles, and typically a degree in graphic or visual design. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and Sketch is essential, along with knowledge of UX/UI best practices. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication help designers collaborate and bring innovative ideas to life. These competencies are critical for producing compelling, user-focused designs that meet client or organizational goals.

Job description

Job Description C2's client, a well-established point-of-purchase marketing and strategy partner that brings together design, engineering, print, technology, and fulfillment under one roof, seeks a Mid-Level Graphic Designer to join a growing creative team. Here, designers work alongside engineering, print, and fulfillment teams to develop retail campaigns from concept through production, seeing their work come to life in the displays, signage, and merchandising systems that influence shoppers on their path to purchase. Most of the work focuses on "below-the-line" marketing: the point-of-purchase (POP) displays, retail signage, and merchandising systems that surround the product on the sales floor.

The hiring manager is actively investing in the creative team and is looking for a designer who wants to take ownership, contribute ideas, and grow alongside the business. Start Date: First week of August (pending final scheduling) Duration: Direct hire or contract-to-hire (to be finalized); full-time, long-term Location: Onsite, Jackson, WI, Monday through Friday Compensation: Commensurate with experience Technology: Client provides hardware and software Job Description The Mid-Level Graphic Designer creates point-of-purchase displays, retail signage, merchandising systems, and other in-store marketing materials from concept through final production. Responsibilities Design and produce point-of-purchase displays, retail signage, merchandising systems, and related in-store marketing materials Take ownership of projects from concept through final production with minimal oversight Partner with the Creative Director and broader creative team to support a growing portfolio of retail brands Develop creative solutions that balance strong design thinking with production realities Apply generative AI tools where appropriate to accelerate concept development and creative workflows Prepare production-ready files and collaborate with internal print and production teams to ensure quality execution Requirements A strong portfolio demonstrating mid-level graphic design experience, with point-of-purchase or retail merchandising experience preferred Strong proficiency in Figma and Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop) Working familiarity with generative AI design tools and AI-assisted creative workflows Working knowledge of print production and how design translates to fabrication, including lithographic or large-format digital printing Ability to manage projects independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams Self-driven, collaborative, and low ego, with genuine pride in the craft of design Not your type of gig, but know someone who would be interested.
