Job description

Junior AV Systems Engineer

The Junior AV Systems Engineer reports to the Director of Classroom Engineering and is responsible for the audio/visual infrastructure of the University and the audio/visual/lighting of all University classrooms and events venues, including the University's upcoming Athletic Complex. This includes providing engineering, planning, control system programming, installation, maintenance, and technical performance of all University audiovisual systems.
Work Location: Virginia Beach, VA
Salary: $45,000 - $50,000 annually
Essential duties:
  • Provide support engineering, control system programming, installation, maintenance, administration & technical performance for all university operated audio/visual/event lighting systems.
  • Responsible for maintenance and repairs on all audiovisual systems. Determine when outside repair is warranted and take steps necessary to perform the required maintenance or repairs.
  • Support the primary administrator over network-based audio/visual/lighting systems including monitoring all audio/visual/lighting systems, performing routine software/hardware updates, consulting with manufacturing technicians and making necessary field repairs.
  • Reports on the various systems to track usage, monitor maintenance schedules and repairs.
  • Participate in the planning of AV installations, events, & other university audio/visual/lighting/production needs.
  • Provide training and supervision to assigned Media Services Student Workers and Graduate Assistants.
  • Responsible for upkeeping the inventory of university media equipment.
  • Monitor network-based AV systems, troubleshoot basic issues with Dante audio, AV-over-IP, and SMPTE ST 2110 devices, and report connectivity or performance concerns to senior engineers.
  • Assist with documentation of AV system configurations, network connections, and as-built drawings for university facilities.
  • Assist with fiber optic patching, cable termination, and basic splicing tasks under the supervision of senior engineers.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Oversee instruction of audiovisual equipment and systems in technology equipped rooms when required
  • Recommends purchases and repairs of audiovisual equipment/systems and supplies
  • Assists with University events as needed
  • Participate in staff training sessions
  • Assist with cable pathway surveys and site assessments to support new AV installations across campus
  • Assist with safely operating vehicles (including golf carts and trucks) for transport and delivery of AV equipment across campus

Qualifications:
  • One to three years minimum experience required, three to five years preferred, using standard audiovisual equipment: sound, video, film, and personal computers, preferably in an academic or related environment
  • Formal training with industry certification and/or the ability to demonstrate equivalent practical experience
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends as required
  • Ability to occasionally move equipment, climb ladders, and lift equipment of 50-75 lbs.
  • Familiarity with SMPTE ST 2110 professional media over IP standards is a plus; willingness to learn is required.
  • Basic familiarity with fiber optic patching, termination types (LC, SC, ST), and splicing concepts; hands-on training provided.
