What is full-time employment?

Full-time employment hours are generally determined by the employer. There is no single universal definition; however, various laws and policies govern different types of eligibility and statuses. For example, the Fair Labor Standards Act does not define full-time employment but does require overtime pay after 40 hours of work in a workweek for non-exempt employees. The Affordable Care Act, in determining Applicable Large Employers, defines full-time employees as those working an average of at least 30 hours per week, or 130 hours a month. The H-1B Visa Program defines full-time as 40 hours per week, normally, and in no event would less than 35 hours per week be considered to be full-time employment. In practice, full-time employment is typically between 32 and 40 hours per week.

What does it mean to work a full-time job?

A full-time job typically refers to a position where an employee works a standard number of hours set by their employer, usually around 35 to 40 hours per week. Full-time employees often receive benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, and retirement plan options, which may not be available to part-time workers. The exact definition of full-time can vary by company and country, but it generally signifies a long-term, regular commitment to the employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full-time employee, and why are they important?

To thrive as a full-time employee, you need a strong work ethic, time management skills, and relevant job-specific qualifications or education. Familiarity with industry-standard tools, productivity software, or certifications related to your role is often expected. Reliability, adaptability, and effective communication are critical soft skills that help you excel in team environments. These skills and qualities are important for consistently meeting job expectations, contributing to organizational goals, and advancing your career.

What are some common challenges professionals face when transitioning to a full-time role from part-time or contract work?

Transitioning to a full-time position often involves adapting to a more structured schedule, increased workload, and higher expectations for long-term commitment and team collaboration. Full-time roles typically require deeper integration into company culture and more involvement in ongoing projects, which can be a significant adjustment for those used to flexible or project-based work. Additionally, full-time employees may encounter new responsibilities such as regular meetings, performance reviews, and opportunities for professional development within the organization.

We are hiring a Pool & Spa Service Technician who can work **full time in the busy pool season** and **part time in the winter**. You will handle pool and spa openings, closings, weekly maintenance, and light repairs while working independently in the field and interacting directly with our customers.

**Schedule** - Full-time April–October (typically 35–50 hours per week depending on weather and workload). - Part-time November–March, averaging about 20 hours per week focused on hot tub service, maintenance projects, and training. - Some early mornings and occasional Saturdays during peak season. - This role is ideal for someone who wants strong hours in the summer with steady, lighter hours in the winter.

**Pay & perks** - Starting pay: 22–26 per hour, depending on experience and mechanical skills. - IRA retirement plan with employer match starting on day one. - Gas reimbursement when using your own vehicle for company work. - Opportunity to be assigned a company truck after a successful training and probationary period, based on performance and reliability. - Paid training on pool and spa systems, with growth potential to Lead Technician as the company grows.

**What you’ll do** - Open and close residential and commercial pools and spas following company procedures. - Perform weekly pool and spa service: skimming, vacuuming, brushing, filter cleaning, and general cleaning. - Test and balance water chemistry and apply chemicals safely. - Troubleshoot and perform basic repairs on pumps, filters, heaters, and controls. - Use a mobile app/CRM to receive jobs, record work completed, and upload photos and notes. - Communicate professionally with customers on site and report larger issues to the office.

**What we’re looking for** - Valid Vermont driver’s license and clean driving record. - Reliable personal vehicle capable of safely hauling equipment and chemicals (pickup, van, or SUV-type vehicle). - Ability to lift 50 lbs and work outdoors in varying Vermont weather. - Mechanical aptitude (auto, trades, maintenance, or similar background is a plus). - Reliable, on time, able to work independently and follow checklists and procedures. - Comfortable using a smartphone for navigation, photos, and job notes.

**About Professional Pool & Spa Services of Vermont** We are a growing, family-owned pool and spa service company serving the Stowe and Central Vermont area. We focus on honest communication, quality work, and building long-term relationships with our customers. If you enjoy hands-on work, being outdoors, and want strong hours in the summer with steady winter work, we’d like to talk with you.
