What is full-time employment?

Full-time employment hours are generally determined by the employer. There is no single universal definition; however, various laws and policies govern different types of eligibility and statuses. For example, the Fair Labor Standards Act does not define full-time employment but does require overtime pay after 40 hours of work in a workweek for non-exempt employees. The Affordable Care Act, in determining Applicable Large Employers, defines full-time employees as those working an average of at least 30 hours per week, or 130 hours a month. The H-1B Visa Program defines full-time as 40 hours per week, normally, and in no event would less than 35 hours per week be considered to be full-time employment. In practice, full-time employment is typically between 32 and 40 hours per week.

What does it mean to work a full-time job?

A full-time job typically refers to a position where an employee works a standard number of hours set by their employer, usually around 35 to 40 hours per week. Full-time employees often receive benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, and retirement plan options, which may not be available to part-time workers. The exact definition of full-time can vary by company and country, but it generally signifies a long-term, regular commitment to the employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full-time employee, and why are they important?

To thrive as a full-time employee, you need a strong work ethic, time management skills, and relevant job-specific qualifications or education. Familiarity with industry-standard tools, productivity software, or certifications related to your role is often expected. Reliability, adaptability, and effective communication are critical soft skills that help you excel in team environments. These skills and qualities are important for consistently meeting job expectations, contributing to organizational goals, and advancing your career.

What are some common challenges professionals face when transitioning to a full-time role from part-time or contract work?

Transitioning to a full-time position often involves adapting to a more structured schedule, increased workload, and higher expectations for long-term commitment and team collaboration. Full-time roles typically require deeper integration into company culture and more involvement in ongoing projects, which can be a significant adjustment for those used to flexible or project-based work. Additionally, full-time employees may encounter new responsibilities such as regular meetings, performance reviews, and opportunities for professional development within the organization.

What is the difference between Full Time vs Part Time?

AspectFull TimePart Time

Full Time jobs involve working standard hours with benefits and greater job security, while Part Time roles offer more flexibility with fewer benefits. The choice depends on your work-life balance needs and career goals.

Job description

Keyholder  - Full-Time

Honolulu, HI - Ala Moana Center

At Rothy’s, we believe there’s a better way to do business—one that puts the planet and its people first. That’s why we’ve transformed millions of plastic bottles into stylish, sustainable shoes and bags, creating wardrobe staples that look just as good as they feel.

In our retail stores, clienteling, and genuine connection are at the heart of everything we do. We take pride in building lasting relationships with our customers—getting to know their style, anticipating their needs, and creating personalized experiences that make them feel truly seen and supported. Whether it’s helping someone find their perfect fit or sharing the story behind our sustainable designs, every interaction is an opportunity to deepen that connection.

As we grow, we’re cultivating not just a workplace, but a community. It’s a place where careers can grow, ideas are shared, and people feel a true sense of belonging. Every day brings new opportunities to learn, lead, and make an impact—together, as part of a welcoming, inclusive team that celebrates each other’s contributions.

About the team:

Shopping at Rothy’s IRL is not your ordinary retail experience—so naturally, our Stores team is extraordinary, too. Experts in the fit, wear and sizing of our shoes, these team members provide deep knowledge of every Rothy’s style and out-of-this-world customer service—creating long-lasting brand loyalty. Customers love shopping in our stores due to these exceptional interactions.

About the role:

As a Keyholder, you will help bring our company values to life by creating a service-first culture on the sales floor and supporting smooth store operations. You’ll act as a role model for your peers, delivering exceptional customer experiences, coaching in the moment, and upholding operational excellence. As part of the leadership team, you may serve as Manager on Duty, ensuring the store reflects our brand standards and values in every interaction.

What you’ll do:

Customer Experience (80%)

  • Lead and model Rothy’s Experience through exceptional service and selling on the sales floor by coaching and guiding team members to consistently uphold brand standards

  • Drive personal and team sales results, by delivering the Rothy’s Experience to all customers and supporting your teammates through coaching and team selling

  • Create lasting relationships with our customers by engaging in strong clienteling practices

  • Assist with the execution of in store events and activations that engage the local community, support brand awareness, and drive sales

  • Support with onboarding and training by reinforcing store standards, SOPs, service expectations, selling behaviors, and product knowledge on the sales floor

Team Leadership & Operational Excellence (20%)

  • Act as Manager on Duty when assigned ensuring daily operations, visual merchandising tasks, and service expectations are being met by all team members

  • Own assigned areas of responsibility as part of the Division of Responsibility (DOR) program and communicate progress, opportunities, and feedback to store leadership

You are:
  • Guided by Rothy’s values and committed to fostering a welcoming, service driven environment:

    • Embrace Possibility. We dream BIG, really big

    • Obsess Over Innovation: We never accept the status quo

    • Make the Planet Proud. We make the right choice, not the easy one

    • Collaboration is Key. We’re laser focused on driving results

  • 18 years of age or older

You have:
  • 1–2 years of retail or customer service experience, ideally with some leadership responsibility

  • A proven ability to connect with customers and deliver exceptional service

  • Experience supporting operational tasks such as merchandising, shipment, or stockroom leadership

  • A desire to grow your leadership skills

  • Ability to stand/walk an entire shift

  • Ability to lift, push carry or otherwise move up to 25 lbs

  • Ability to frequently bending, reaching, stretching, and safely use ladders and step stools

  • Ability to uphold Rothy’s Experience by following our dress code, including wearing Rothy’s shoes during every shift

  • Availability to work a minimum of 40 hours/week, including peak business days (Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays), holidays, and evening and opening shifts

Our benefits:
  • Generous paid time off

  • 401k matching

  • Comprehensive health plans for you and your family

  • Supplemental mental health benefits

  • Monthly wellness reimbursement

  • Employee Discount Program!
