Job description

Deseret Cattle & Timber is seeking a Cattle Unit Manager to join the local ranch leadership team!
Summary:
The Cattle Unit Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a cattle unit. This role ensures high standards in animal welfare, pasture management, and team leadership, while aligning with the strategic goals set by the General Manager. This is a key role in implementing the best practices, maintaining infrastructure and fostering a safe and productive work environment. Cattle Unit Managers will also care for their own cow herd.
Responsibilities:
  • Lead cattle care operations by coordinating staff assignments, setting priorities, and ensuring consistent execution of feeding, health monitoring, and handling practices.
  • Guide staff in implementing grazing plans, monitoring pasture conditions, and executing rotation schedules that support sustainable forage use and herd health.
  • Direct employees maintaining optimal cow condition, targeting a Body Condition Score (BCS) of 5 or better on at least 75% of the herd, with minimal BCS 3 cows.
  • Maintain accurate records of herd performance, treatments, pasture usage and cattle inventory.
  • Monitor and maintain ranch infrastructure, including fencing, water systems, and equipment.
  • Manage budget tracking and cost control for the unit.
  • Support the adoption of new technologies and best practices to improve operational efficiency and sustainability.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, safety standards and company policies.
  • Respond to emergencies such as weather events, animal health issues, or equipment failures.
  • Supervise, train, and support unit employees by fostering a productive and collaborative work environment, while ensuring adherence to safety protocols, animal welfare standards, and applicable company policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Other information:
  • Bachelor's degree in animal science, ranch management, or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in cattle operations, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of livestock handling, pasture and range management, and ranch equipment.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining machinery and heavy equipment.
  • Effective leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with ranch management software, data entry, and maintaining accurate records and reports.
  • Ability to maintain and improve ranch infrastructure.
  • Commitment to safety and employee training.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to work in remote outdoor environments.

  • Regular lifting up to ~50 lbs; prolonged standing and walking; frequent bending, crouching, climbing, and kneeling; frequent hand use for tools and animal handling; sufficient vision and hearing to monitor livestock health; regular physical exertion.
  • Primarily outdoor ranch environments; exposure to all weather conditions; uneven terrain; dust, dander, manure; variable noise; frequent interaction with large animals and equipment; variable hours including early mornings, weekends, and holidays; PPE required as applicable.
