Job description

POSITION: Chief Engineer
LOCATION: Colorado Springs, CO
REQUIRED SECURITY CLEARANCE: Active TSI with SCI eligibility
POSITION TYPE/STANDARD WORK HOURS: Full time, 40 hours
THE OPPORTUNITY:
Upon award, BTAS will be filling potential openings for the Space Systems Command (SSC). SSC plays a critical role in advancing the United States's space capabilities, delivering cutting-edge solutions to protect and enhance national security. SSC/SZBC specializes in highly classified Space Domain Awareness (SDA) systems, Defensive and Offensive Space Control (DSC/OSC) capabilities, and space test range assets to support the Department of Defense’s (DoD) current and future operational needs.
As a leader in space technology, SSC/SZ-BC is responsible for the development, integration, testing, deployment, and sustainment of mission-critical systems spanning the entire acquisition life cycle. These efforts ensure the United States Space Force (USSF) and its mission partners maintain a strategic advantage in space operations. This position will support multiple SSC/SZ-BC programs, as well as other initiatives across the Space Force, Air Force, and allied organizations.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide space acquisitions, engineering, operations, and technical support for all stages of the acquisition life cycle.
  • Support program acquisition efforts for advanced technology, future concept development, and integration activities.
  • Advise the government on cost, schedule, and performance matters.
  • Draft and revise Joint Capabilities Integrated Development System (JCIDS) and acquisition documents, ensuring compliance with the latest government guidance (e.g., MIL-STD). Documents include:
    • Initial Capability Documents, Interface Control Documents
    • Capability Development, Production, and Requirements Documents
    • Milestone documentation, Acquisition Strategies, and Analysis of Alternatives
    • Concept of Operations, Memorandums of Agreement/Understanding
    • Technical and Systems Requirement Documents, Defense Acquisition Board documentation
    • Technical Evaluations, System Specifications, enabling concepts, training material, briefings, white papers, reports, and analysis results
  • Provide draft technical and programmatic status reports on individual programs or the portfolio in coordination with the government program manager.
  • Identify and recommend acquisition process improvements and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Assist in building and maintaining a government risk program, including risk identification, process definition, and technical risk mitigation planning.
  • Maintain awareness of program schedules, monitor acquisition implementation, and report requirement shortfalls.
  • Correlate program execution data with baselines to update acquisition reports accurately.
  • Advise the government program manager on technical engagements, including:
    • Technical interchange meetings, design reviews, program conferences, video teleconferences, telecons, working groups, and informational meetings
    • Establishing and maintaining customer and contractor interfaces
    • Supporting integrated product teams and working groups
  • Provide technical and operational insight for mission protection, operations, and mission data assessments.
  • Recommend solutions for technical anomalies and support impact analysis, audits, compliance inspections, and readiness reviews.
  • Support ongoing and new Command and Control (C2) efforts and integrate them into the classified portfolio.
  • Act as a liaison between Space C2, Enterprise Ground Services (EGS), and classified program offices to ensure seamless integration.
  • Advise and assist the government on test and operations, including:
    • Test documents, planning, events, requirements, and data for Developmental and Operational Testing
    • System-level test integration and activities coordination
  • Provide analytical and operational engineering support for developmental and operational units.
  • Support operational mission planning, mission protection, and anomaly engineering.
  • Assist with data and signal collection, processing, storage, archiving, and analysis for testing, operations, and future concept developments.
  • Support post-mission analysis and reporting on plan versus execution results.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Expert in highly classified space control space, ground, and C2 systems (concepts, development, build, and test)
  • Expert in maturing technologies through all TRL levels
  • Expert in architecture and technical requirements development
  • Highly knowledgeable in space situational awareness architecture development and capability limitations
  • Expert in systems engineering and program management focused on development, testing, and employing information operations, space, and airborne systems
  • Expert in space system design, development, integration, test, and operations
  • Expert in multiple space control-related technologies, including but not limited to optical sensors, radar, electronic support, signals intelligence, and communications
  • Highly knowledgeable in space control mission area
  • Demonstrates ability to develop, update, and coordinate ACAT-like program documentation
  • Highly knowledgeable in ground system design, development, integration, test, and operations
  • Demonstrates ability to organize and conduct system level technical design reviews and audits
  • Position must be an SME Recognized Industry Leader
  • BA/BS degree required
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position does not supervise the work of others.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to operate a computer and other standard office equipment. Must be able to remain in a stationary position, 80%.

COMPENSATION / SALARY RANGE:
BTAS adheres to federal, state, and local regulations. This is a Full-Time, Salary, Exempt position. The following salary range is what we reasonably expect to pay but is contingent and subject to a variety of factors, including but not limited to years of experience, education, certification(s), training, specialized skills, responsibilities, etc.
SALARY RANGE: $188,000 - $191,000 Annual Salary
