JOB SUMMARY
Carver County Public Works is looking for a dynamic person to join our Operations team. Under the direction of the Assistant Public Works Director/Operations Engineer, the Transportation Operations Technician or Senior Transportation Operations Technician will provide skilled labor and technical assistance to the Public Works Division as described in each level.
We are currently looking for someone to fill one of these Transportation roles. The classification will be dependent upon the candidate's qualifications.
The position includes regularly using and operating light and heavy equipment, materials, and tools in the performance of operations, maintenance, installations, and repairs and other duties of a similar nature or level. This position is required to perform highway maintenance activities as requested by the Operations Manager if such need arises. The Senior Transportation Technician will be assigned a full-time snowplow route for winter snow and ice removal and subject to 24/7 call out availability for all types of highway maintenance issues.
This position is subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing under 49 CFR Part 382 and 49 CFR Part 40.
This is a safety-sensitive position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Transportation Operations Technician:
  • High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years related and progressive experience with a highway agency or private firm.
  • Must currently hold or be able to obtain within 12 months of employment, a valid Class A Minnesota Driver's License with air brake and tank vehicle endorsements.
  • Must currently hold or be able to obtain within 24 months of employment MnDOT certification or successful class completion in the following areas: Traffic Control Supervisor Certification, Signal and Lighting Certification, Traffic Signs 101, Traffic Signals 101.
  • Must currently hold or be able to obtain within 12 months of the MN Department of Labor and Industry Electrical License requirements for Registered Unlicensed Electrician Certificate for work under the County Class A MN Master Electrician.
  • Must currently hold or be able to obtain within 24 months of employment American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) and International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) certification in the following areas: IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician or ATSSA Traffic Control Technician.

Senior Transportation Operations Technician:
  • High School Diploma or GED and three (3) years related and progressive work experience with a highway agency, including highway traffic and traffic control maintenance and operations.
  • Valid Class A Minnesota Driver's License with air brake and tank vehicle and hazardous materials endorsements.
  • Must currently hold or be able to obtain within 24 months of employment MnDOT certification or successful class completion in the following areas: Traffic Control Supervisor Certification, Signal and Lighting Certification, Traffic Signs 101, Traffic Signals 101, Signing Plan Design Course - At-Grade Intersections, Traffic Signal Timing and Coordination, SignCAD Software Updates Training Class.
  • Must currently hold or be able to obtain within 12 months of employment the MN Department of Labor and Industry Electrical License requirements for work under the County Class A MN Master Electrician.

SCORED EXAMINATION PROCESS
All applications will be screened for minimum qualifications, scored and ranked. The highest ranked candidates meeting minimum qualifications will be recommended for the scored oral examinations (interviews). Final selection for the position will include successful completion of oral interview(s), reference checks, background investigation including FMCSA Clearinghouse and CJIS fingerprinting, and pre-placement physical, including DOT drug screen.
