Job description

AC Paving Superintendent (Heavy Civil – Caltrans Projects)

Position Summary

An AC (Asphalt Concrete) Paving Superintendent oversees asphalt paving operations for roadway, highway, and site development projects. This role manages field crews, equipment, subcontractors, schedules, safety compliance, quality control, and coordination with project managers and clients to ensure paving projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily asphalt paving operations and field personnel
  • Coordinate paving schedules, trucking logistics, and equipment utilization
  • Ensure projects comply with plans, specifications, and quality standards
  • Monitor asphalt placement, compaction, grade, and paving tolerances
  • Lead and enforce company safety policies and OSHA compliance
  • Conduct daily job-site meetings and safety briefings
  • Coordinate with project managers, estimators, inspectors, subcontractors, and suppliers
  • Review project drawings, specifications, and production targets
  • Manage labor productivity and crew assignments
  • Troubleshoot field issues related to paving, grading, traffic control, or materials
  • Track quantities, production rates, delays, and daily reports
  • Inspect equipment condition and coordinate maintenance needs
  • Ensure proper traffic control and public safety procedures are followed
  • Support training and development of operators and labor crews
  • Maintain communication with clients, municipalities, and inspectors

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 5–10+ years of asphalt paving experience
  • 3–5+ years in a supervisory or superintendent role preferred
  • Strong knowledge of asphalt paving operations, compaction methods, and roadway construction
  • Ability to read blueprints, grading plans, and project specifications
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety standards
  • Experience managing paving crews, equipment operators, and subcontractors
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Valid driver’s license 
  • Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and travel as needed

Preferred Skills

  • GPS grade control and paving technology experience
  • Knowledge of DOT specifications and testing requirements
  • Experience with milling, grading, and underground coordination
  • Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills a plus
  • Proficiency with construction reporting software and scheduling tools

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, and work around heavy equipment
  • Frequently lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work long shifts during paving operations

Hours: Full-time

Location: Various

Compensation: $120,000- $150,000 annually. The exact starting compensation to be offered will be determined at the time of selecting an applicant for hire and will be dependent on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill set, experience, education, credentials, and Licensure when applicable.
