What You'll Do: 

  • Serve to support your practice team, setting the bar for providing high-level, competent veterinary support care and embodying the Chewy Vet Care culture to work collaboratively with your peers and deliver the pet parent WOW experience.   

  • Responsible for implementing the outlined policies and procedures, utilizing integrated technology, and delivering consistent and appropriate medical care within the given skill set.  

  • Identify common canine vaccines; differentiate core/non-core (Rabies, DAPP, Bordetella, Leptospirosis, Influenza, Lyme) 

  • Identify common feline vaccines; differentiate core/non-core (Rabies, FVRCP, FeLV) 

  • Knowledge of common heartworm and flea/tick preventatives 

  • Understand heartworm disease transmission; species susceptibility (cats can get HW) 

  • Recognize signs of vaccine reaction 

  • Reconstitute a vaccine and prepare it for administration 

  • Prepare an injection 

  • Prepare an IV bag and administer subcutaneous fluids (correct line setup, priming, needle attachment) 

  • Remove an IV catheter and place a proper bandage post-removal 

  • Use a refractometer to read and interpret urine specific gravity (USG) 

  • Prepare a fecal float (correct loop, solution, slide setup) 

  • Prepare a cytology slide using a cotton swab and microscope slide 

  • Run the equipment for a CBC Chem 

  • Able to accurately balance a centrifuge for diagnostic sample prep 

  • Demonstrate proper patient restraint for canine and feline patients 

  • Assist with canine cephalic vein blood draw and feline medial saphenous blood draw and jugular blood draw 

  • Trim, Dremel, and document nail trims 

  • Assist with positioning patients and taking diagnostic radiographs with proper collimation and understand radiation safety 

  • Understanding of generalized pre and post operative care 

  • Obtain and communicate thorough patient history and signalment effectively to the veterinarian 

  • Able to understand and fill prescription orders and write proper medication labels 

  • Be proficient using the PIMS and aid others on the team 

  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Standards of Care (SOCs) 

  • Assist practice manager with communicating on inventory needs.  

  • Clean workspaces after every patient or patient lab sample interaction. 

  • Participation in self-development courses and Chewy Vet Care required compliance training.  

  • Perform related duties and assignments as directed by management.  

What you’ll need

  • Successful completion of an accredited veterinary assistant program is preferred.  

  • Demonstrated ability to complete the veterinary assistant skills checklist for Veterinary Assistant. 

  • 2+ years of experience as a Veterinary Assistant in practice.  

  • Passionate about helping people and pets with empathy and excellent customer service focus. 

  • Strong ability to connect with clients and demonstrate empathy and compassion.  

  • Excellent verbal / written communication, observational, and analytical skills.  

  • Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.  

  • May be required to work weekends, position may require some travel. 

Physical job requirements:  

  • Standing or walking up to 80% per shift.  

  • Frequently lift up to 50 pounds.  

  • Frequently lift up to 70 pounds using an optional team lift.  

  • Rarely lift greater than 70+ pounds using a team lift.  

  • Stand, push, pull, carry, squat, and kneel.
