Director of Surgical Services

Perioperative Services | Full-Time | Days | Exempt

The Director of Surgical Services provides strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for the Operating Room (OR), Pre-Operative Services, Ambulatory Surgery, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and Sterile Processing (SPD). This role is accountable for the overall performance of Surgical Services, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care while advancing quality outcomes, patient safety, physician engagement, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, employee development, and financial stewardship.


As a visible, hands-on leader, the Director partners with physicians, anesthesia providers, nursing leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to optimize surgical services, develop high-performing teams, and drive continuous improvement.

  • Lead the daily operations of the OR, Pre-Op, Ambulatory Surgery, PACU, and Sterile Processing departments.
  • Develop, coach, and lead high-performing teams while fostering accountability, engagement, and collaboration.
  • Partner with physicians, anesthesia providers, and executive leadership to optimize surgical operations and patient outcomes.
  • Oversee staffing, scheduling, productivity, workforce planning, recruitment, and retention.
  • Drive quality, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor operational, clinical, and financial performance, including OR utilization, throughput, first-case on-time starts, productivity, and patient experience.
  • Manage departmental operating and capital budgets while optimizing labor, supplies, and equipment.
  • Develop policies, remove operational barriers, and lead initiatives that improve efficiency, quality, and patient outcomes.

Education and Work Experience

  1. Current and valid state license as a Registered Nurse
  2. Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
  3. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)-(AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
  4. Minimum of 5 years Acute Care experience
  5. Minimum of 2 years previous Administrative experience preferred.
  6. Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

The Director of Nursing (DON) organizes and administers areas of clinical and patient care services to attain facility objectives established by hospital administration. Hospital-wide programs, policies and procedures are developed to assess, evaluate and meet the needs of the patient. Develops and implements hospital plans for providing nursing care, treatment, and clinical services to those patients requiring care treatment and services. The DON participates with the management, medical staff and clinical leaders in the facility's decision making structures and processes. The DON implements an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess and improve the quality of nursing care, treatment and services delivered to patients.
