How much do full time sheriff jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average yearly pay for full time sheriff in the United States is $70,960.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $53,000.00 and $80,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can I be a sheriff without being a cop?

Typically, a sheriff is an elected law enforcement official who oversees a county's law enforcement agencies, and while they often have law enforcement experience, they are not necessarily required to be a police officer beforehand. However, many sheriffs have backgrounds as police officers or deputies, and certain qualifications such as law enforcement training, certifications, and experience are usually expected for deputies or staff working under the sheriff. The specific requirements can vary by jurisdiction, but the role of sheriff itself is often an elected position rather than a traditional police job.
