Medical Laboratory Scientist II (Blood Bank / Transfusion Medicine)

Location: Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Schedule: 4 Days/Week, 10-Hour Shifts (40 Hours/Week)

Pay Range: $26.85 – $45.04 per Hour
Sign-On Bonus: $10,000 Commitment Incentive (Paid in 4 Installments Over 2 Years)


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform complex blood bank and transfusion medicine testing with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Conduct:
    • Type & Screen testing
    • Antibody Identification
    • Direct Antiglobulin Testing (DAT)
    • Eluate testing
    • Phenotyping
    • Antigen Typing
  • Perform blood product modifications, including:
    • Irradiation
    • Syringe aliquots
  • Support emergency transfusion operations, including:
    • Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP)
    • Emergency Release procedures
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation, specimen issues, test discrepancies, and workflow challenges.
  • Perform quality control and proficiency testing activities.
  • Monitor laboratory accuracy, precision, and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare reagents, controls, standards, and testing materials.
  • Maintain inventory and laboratory supplies.
  • Serve as a technical resource for laboratory staff.
  • Train and mentor new employees and students.
  • Participate in special projects, quality initiatives, and departmental improvement efforts.
  • Maintain compliance with CLIA, CAP, and institutional policies and procedures.


Required Qualifications:

Option 1

  • Associate Degree in:
    • Clinical Laboratory Science
    • Medical Laboratory Technology
    • Chemical Science
    • Biological Science
  • MLT (ASCP) or MLT (AMT) certification
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant laboratory experience

Option 2

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Science or Biological Science
  • ASCP categorical certification in the specialty area
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant laboratory experience

Option 3

  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science
  • MT/MLS (ASCP) or MT/MLS (AMT) certification
  • No experience required

  • ASCP Categorical Certification
