Job description

Position Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing professional nursing care to patients presenting to the clinic. The RN assesses patient needs, prioritizes care based on acuity, assists providers with examinations and procedures, provides patient education, and coordinates care to ensure timely, high-quality treatment. The RN functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team and promotes exceptional patient care, safety, and customer service.

Essential Duties

Patient Care

  • Performs comprehensive nursing assessments and accurately documents findings in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Utilizes sound clinical judgment to prioritize patient care based on acuity.
  • Performs nurse triage and identifies patients requiring immediate provider evaluation or emergency services.
  • Obtains and records vital signs, medical history, allergies, medications, and chief complaints.
  • Administers medications, injections, immunizations, and treatments within scope of practice and provider orders.
  • Performs wound care, dressing changes, splinting, suture removal, and other nursing procedures.
  • Assists providers with examinations, procedures, and minor surgical interventions.
  • Collects laboratory specimens and performs point-of-care testing.
  • Monitors patients during treatments and responds appropriately to changes in condition.
  • Recognizes medical emergencies and initiates appropriate emergency response protocols.

Care Coordination

  • Collaborates with providers, medical assistants, and referral staff to coordinate patient care.
  • Coordinates follow-up appointments and communicates care plans with primary care providers.

Patient Education

  • Provides education regarding diagnoses, medications, treatments, and preventive health.
  • Reinforces provider instructions and verifies patient understanding.
  • Encourages patient participation in treatment plans and healthy lifestyle practices.

Documentation

  • Documents all patient assessments, interventions, education, and communications accurately and in a timely manner in the EHR.
  • Maintains accurate medication administration records.
  • Completes required reports and documentation in accordance with clinic policies and regulatory standards.

Clinic Operations

  • Assists with maintaining exam rooms and treatment areas.
  • Ensures medical supplies, medications, and emergency equipment are adequately stocked.
  • Participates in infection prevention and control activities.
  • Performs quality assurance activities and assists with quality improvement initiatives.
  • Reviews laboratory and diagnostic results according to provider protocols.
  • Other duties as assigned within RN scope of practice.

Teamwork

  • Demonstrates professionalism and promotes a positive team environment.
  • Assists coworkers during periods of high patient volume.
  • Serves as a clinical resource for medical assistants and other support staff as appropriate.
  • Participates in orientation and training of new employees.

Education and Skills

  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program.
  • Current California Registered Nurse license in good standing.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • One to three years of outpatient, urgent care, emergency department, or primary care nursing experience preferred.
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to urgent and emergent medical conditions.
  • Excellent communication and patient education skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple patients in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with providers and multidisciplinary teams.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach throughout the workday.
  • Lift and move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
