How much do full time rheology scientist jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 7, 2026, the average yearly pay for full time rheology scientist in the United States is $111,343.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $94,500.00 and $137,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a Full Time Rheology Scientist do?

A Full Time Rheology Scientist studies the flow and deformation of materials, particularly liquids and soft solids, to understand their physical properties. They design and conduct experiments using specialized instruments to test viscosity, elasticity, and other rheological properties. The data they gather helps improve products in industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and polymers. Their work often involves collaborating with product development teams and interpreting results to solve complex material challenges.

What are some common challenges faced by a Full Time Rheology Scientist when working with complex materials, and how are they typically addressed?

A Full Time Rheology Scientist often encounters challenges such as sample instability, reproducibility issues, and interpreting data from complex or non-Newtonian materials. These challenges are usually addressed by optimizing sample preparation methods, using advanced rheological instruments, and collaborating closely with materials scientists or formulation chemists. It is also common to perform repeated measurements and utilize statistical analysis to ensure data reliability. Staying updated with the latest analytical techniques and regularly calibrating equipment are key practices to maintain high-quality results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Rheology Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Rheology Scientist, you need a strong background in physical chemistry or materials science, often supported by an advanced degree and experience in rheological testing. Familiarity with rheometers, viscometers, data analysis software, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help distinguish top-performing scientists in this field. These combined abilities ensure accurate characterization of materials, support product development, and facilitate clear reporting of complex findings to interdisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Full Time Rheology Scientist vs Rheology Technician?

AspectFull Time Rheology ScientistRheology Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Materials Science, Chemistry, or related field; experience in rheological testingAssociate's or Bachelor's; technical training in rheological methods
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, product development, testing facilitiesLaboratory testing, sample preparation, data collection
Employer & Industry UsageResearch institutions, manufacturing, R&D departments in industries like polymers, food, cosmeticsManufacturers, testing labs, quality control in similar industries

The Full Time Rheology Scientist typically holds higher education credentials and focuses on experimental design, data analysis, and research. Rheology Technicians support testing processes, sample prep, and data collection. Both roles are essential in rheological testing but differ in responsibilities and qualifications.

In this role, you will work at the forefront of scientific ideation-partnering with a broad range of chemistry, materials, and AI teams to define new approaches to formulation, structure-property relationships, and performance evaluation. You will translate these concepts into scalable experimental workflows, custom apparatus, and software-enabled systems for autonomous research.
What You'll Be Building
  • Collaborate with diverse scientific teams to ideate new experimental strategies for soft and complex materials, including formulations, colloids, polymers, gels, and biological or hybrid systems
  • Lead conceptual development of characterization and performance workflows leveraging techniques such as SAXS, SANS, rheology, and formulation performance assays
  • Design, prototype, and validate custom apparatus, experimental methods, and software tools to realize these concepts
  • Develop and refine workflows that connect structure, dynamics, and performance across multiple length and time scales
  • Transfer successful prototypes into production-ready systems within Lila's AI Science Factory platform, enabling autonomous experimentation

What You'll Need to Succeed
  • MS or PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, with a focus on soft or complex materials
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating across scientific disciplines to generate and refine experimental concepts
  • Hands-on experience with one or more of the following: SAXS, SANS, rheology, formulation performance or functional assays
  • Experience designing and implementing custom experimental workflows and/or scientific software
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, C++, or similar) applied to data analysis, automation, or experiment control
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort operating in a fast-paced, exploratory R&D environment

Bonus Points For
  • Experience with lab automation, high-throughput experimentation, or instrument control software
  • Background in formulation science (e.g., consumer products, coatings, energy materials, bio-soft matter)
