Job description

Position Title: EMS Coordinator 

Shift: Days

Status: Full-time

Compensation: $56,000 - $80,000 

Position Summary

The EMS Coordinator is responsible for strengthening the relationship between the hospital and local fire departments/EMS agencies, improving pre-hospital care coordination, supporting emergency preparedness efforts, and enhancing patient outcomes. This position is ideal for a retired firefighter/paramedic bringing deep field experience, strong community ties, and practical leadership to the hospital environment.

Key Responsibilities

EMS Liaison & Community Partnerships

Serve as the primary point of contact between the hospital and local fire departments, EMS agencies, dispatch centers, and first responders.

Foster collaborative relationships through regular ride-alongs, station visits, and participation in regional EMS meetings.

Coordinate case reviews with ED physicians and EMS leadership to improve communication and quality of care.

Support community education efforts, including CPR, stop-the-bleed, and public safety events.

Emergency Department Support

Assist ED leadership in improving handoff processes and pre-arrival notifications.

Facilitate feedback to EMS crews regarding patient dispositions and outcomes.

Participate in daily ED operations huddles when needed to relay EMS-related updates.

Education & Training

Coordinate and deliver ongoing training to hospital staff on EMS protocols, airway management, trauma care, and pre-hospital trends.

Support EMS continuing education (CE) opportunities in collaboration with the hospital’s education department.

Provide onboarding education for new ED team members regarding EMS workflow and field operations.

Emergency Preparedness

Assist the Emergency Preparedness Manager in planning, drills, and response activities.

Utilize field experience to strengthen disaster readiness, triage plans, and mass casualty protocols.

Participate in city, regional, and state emergency planning committees when applicable.

Quality Improvement & Data Review

Monitor EMS turnaround times, documentation accuracy, and handoff quality.

Review pre-hospital care reports and provide constructive feedback to both EMS and ED teams.

Track trends in trauma, cardiac, stroke, and behavioral health EMS transports.

Operational Support

Participate in improvement projects for ambulance bays, radio systems, and ED flow.

Assist with equipment evaluations (stretchers, safety devices, airway tools, etc.).

Provide recommendations for EMS-related technology upgrades.

Qualifications

Retired Firefighter/Paramedic (or EMT-P) with extensive field experience preferred.

Strong communication and teaching skills.

Familiarity with pre-hospital protocols, regional EMS systems, and incident command structure.

Ability to work collaboratively with ED leadership, EMS agencies, and community partners.

Basic computer and documentation skills.
