Full Time Remote Financial Controller information

What is a full time remote financial controller?

A Full Time Remote Financial Controller is a finance professional responsible for overseeing a company's accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls, while working remotely rather than on-site. They ensure the accuracy of financial statements, compliance with regulations, and often play a key role in strategic financial planning. By working remotely, they leverage technology to collaborate with teams, manage financial systems, and provide timely financial insights to support business decisions. This role is essential for organizations looking to maintain robust financial health while benefiting from the flexibility of remote work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time remote financial controller?

To thrive as a Full Time Remote Financial Controller, you need expertise in accounting principles, financial reporting, budgeting, and analysis, typically backed by a degree in finance or accounting and often a CPA or equivalent certification. Proficiency with financial software like QuickBooks, NetSuite, or SAP, and advanced skills in Excel are commonly required. Strong attention to detail, communication, and organizational skills, along with the ability to work independently and manage remote teams, are crucial soft skills. These abilities ensure accurate financial oversight, regulatory compliance, and effective collaboration in a remote work environment.

What are some unique challenges faced by a full time remote financial controller, and how can they be managed effectively?

A Full Time Remote Financial Controller often encounters challenges related to remote team coordination, maintaining data security, and ensuring timely financial reporting without in-person oversight. Effective communication across digital platforms is crucial, as is implementing robust cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive financial data. Regular virtual check-ins, clear documentation of processes, and utilizing collaborative accounting software can help maintain accuracy and foster strong working relationships with both finance team members and other departments.

Job description

Fractional CFO - Turning Financial Data Into Confident Business Decisions (Remote)
Company: How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm (HTM)
Location: 100% Remote (Must reside in AZ, CO, FL, GA, IL, MD, MI, NC, NJ, NY, PA, TX, VA, or WA)
Department: Executive Leadership
Employment Type: Full-Time | W-2 EmployeeCompensation: $110,000 Base Salary + Performance Compensation | $182,000+ On-Target Earnings
Please Read Before Applying
This role requires 10+ years of finance leadership experience, including direct experience managing multiple client relationships simultaneously - as a CFO, Fractional CFO, Outsourced CFO, Virtual CFO, Business Advisor, or in another multi-client financial leadership environment - specifically advising small to mid-sized businesses (roughly $1M-$35M+ in revenue) for 10 or more years.
• Done this before? Keep reading.❌ Background is primarily in managing books, closing monthly financials, or overseeing an accounting team? This is a strategic CFO role, not a Controller or accounting role - likely not the right fit.❌ Career built mainly around large enterprise or corporate finance, without sustained hands-on work with small/mid-sized businesses? Also, likely not the right fit - this role depends on that specific experience.
This is a U.S.-based position. Applicants must currently reside in one of the states listed above and be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship. We're unable to consider candidates residing outside the U.S.
About the Role
At HTM, our CFOs help law firm owners understand their numbers, improve profitability, and make confident business decisions. You'll operate much like a CFO does for any single client - analyzing financials, guiding strategy, building trust - but within a structured portfolio model, serving as the financial partner to ~30 growing law firms.
This is a full-time W-2 executive position - not a 1099 consulting gig or independent fractional practice. HTM provides the clients, systems, and infrastructure so you can focus entirely on helping owners make better financial decisions.
No legal industry experience required - we'll teach you what you need to know about serving law firms.
Why This Beats Running Your Own Practice
If you've built (or considered building) an independent fractional CFO practice, you know the tradeoff: the strategic work is rewarding, but finding clients and running your own back office eats into the work you actually want to do. At HTM, we remove that burden:
  • No business development - we bring you a full portfolio; you never sell or chase your next engagement
  • Predictable income + upside - guaranteed base plus performance compensation, not feast-or-famine
  • Full benefits, real structure - medical/dental/vision (75% employer-paid), 401(k) match, unlimited PTO, and a built-in team
  • Scale without the overhead - ~30 clients with systems and support staff already in place
  • A fast-growing company behind you - Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Company every year since 2013
About HTM
How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm is the nation's leading provider of Fractional C-Suite services for solo and small law firms. Our clients don't need another accountant - they need a financial leader who helps them understand the business and build a more profitable organization.
What You'll Do
This is hands-on financial leadership, not report-and-explain.
  • Serve as the financial leader for ~30 client businesses
  • Review financial statements and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Build forecasts, budgets, cash flow strategies, and KPI dashboards
  • Improve pricing, margins, cash flow, and operational profitability
  • Partner with owners on strategic growth decisions and financial accountability
  • Help businesses become less reactive and more financially disciplined
  • Build trusted, long-term relationships with business owners
What You Bring
  • 10+ years of finance leadership experience, with at least 10 of those years spent specifically advising or leading finance for small to mid-sized businesses ($1M-$35M+ revenue)
  • Direct experience managing multiple client relationships simultaneously (CFO, Fractional CFO, Outsourced CFO, Virtual CFO, Business Advisor, or similar)
  • A track record advising or partnering directly with founders'/business owners of small to mid-sized companies
  • Strong financial analysis, forecasting, and strategic planning skills and the ability to translate data into business recommendations
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional leadership experience
  • Ideal candidates also bring experience in service-based industries (law firms, agencies, consulting), full ownership of financial strategy, and success helping organizations scale beyond founder dependence
Compensation & Benefits
  • $110,000 base + performance compensation ($182,000+ on-target earnings)
  • Medical, dental, vision (75% employer-paid); company-paid short- and long-term disability
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Unlimited PTO, plus a paid Thanksgiving-week shutdown and one additional mandatory paid week off
  • EAP, pet insurance, legal insurance
  • Professional and executive leadership development
  • 100% remote
