What does a full time product security architect do?

A Full Time Product Security Architect is responsible for designing and implementing security solutions throughout the lifecycle of a product. They assess potential security risks, establish best practices, and collaborate with development teams to ensure products are built securely from the ground up. Their role involves threat modeling, security reviews, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. By proactively identifying vulnerabilities, they help protect products and customers from cyber threats.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time product security architect?

A Full Time Product Security Architect requires deep expertise in cybersecurity principles, secure software development, risk assessment, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with security frameworks (such as OWASP, NIST), threat modeling tools, code analysis platforms, and certifications like CISSP or CSSLP is highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills are crucial for effectively working with development teams and stakeholders. These competencies are essential to design, implement, and advocate for robust security measures that protect products and organizations from evolving threats.

What are some common challenges a full time product security architect faces when integrating security into the product development lifecycle?

One common challenge for Product Security Architects is balancing robust security requirements with fast-paced product development cycles. You'll often need to collaborate closely with engineering, product management, and DevOps teams to embed security practices without slowing down innovation. Navigating differing priorities and educating stakeholders about security risks can be demanding, but it's also an opportunity to champion security culture within the organization. Additionally, staying updated with evolving threats and ensuring compliance with industry standards are ongoing responsibilities in this role.

What is the difference between Full Time Product Security Architect vs Product Security Engineer?

  • Drive root cause analysis and architectural improvements following incidents
  • Participate in tabletop exercises and threat modeling activities

Governance, Compliance & Collaboration

  • Ensure environments align with internal standards and frameworks (CIS, NIST, IEC 62443, SOC 2, Roper Cyber Controls)
  • Support audit and compliance efforts with architecture artifacts and technical evidence

  • Detection & Monitoring: SIEM platforms, cloud logging and telemetry
  • Product / IoT: Embedded firmware toolchains, SAST/DAST/SCA, IEC 62443 frameworks
  • DevSecOps & Automation: IaC, CI/CD pipelines, scripting (PowerShell, Python, Bash)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree (or equivalent experience)
  • 8+ years in information security; 4+ years in cloud security architecture, product/IoT security, or enterprise security architecture
  • 2+ years leading or directing security architecture resources or teams
