Job description

At Wolverine Power Cooperative, we help keep the lights on by delivering reliable, affordable power to the communities we proudly serve across Michigan. As a member-owned, mission-driven electric utility, we're committed to safety, system reliability, and developing the next generation of skilled utility professionals.

We're seeking an Apprentice Lineman to join our Operations team at our Grawn Service Center. This position is the first step in a structured apprenticeship program designed to help you build the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to become a Journeyman Lineman.

Whether responding to storms, performing system maintenance, or constructing new facilities, our line crews play a critical role in safely delivering power to Wolverine's members every day.

A Day in the Life

No two days are exactly alike. One day you may be assisting with routine maintenance or construction projects, and the next you could be helping restore service following severe weather. Throughout the apprenticeship, you'll work alongside experienced linemen, gaining hands-on experience while progressing through a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction.

Daily work includes:

  • Assisting with the construction, maintenance, and emergency restoration of overhead, underground, and sub-transmission electric facilities
  • Learning to identify energized electrical equipment, determine nominal voltages, and safely work around electrical hazards
  • Developing the skills required to climb utility structures and safely perform work at heights
  • Participating in line work on both de-energized and energized circuits under the direction of qualified personnel
  • Operating from the ground, aerial devices, and utility structures while following established work practices and safety procedures
  • Operating and maintaining company vehicles, tools, and equipment in a safe and responsible manner
  • Ensuring vehicles, tools, and work equipment remain properly maintained, stocked, clean, and ready for service
  • Working closely with supervisors, linemen, Instrumentation & Communications Technicians, neighboring utilities, and other departments to support system reliability
  • Demonstrating a strong commitment to safety, teamwork, quality workmanship, and continuous improvement
What We're Looking For

We're seeking a motivated individual who is eager to learn, works safely, and enjoys hands-on work in a team environment.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of a pre-apprentice lineworker program
  • A valid Michigan driver's license and a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with air brake endorsement
  • The ability to safely perform physically demanding work, including climbing poles and structures, working at heights, and lifting equipment and materials
  • A willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • A strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and continuous learning
  • The ability to work overtime and respond to emergency situations as needed
  • The ability to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification
Why Join Us?

At Wolverine, we don't just offer jobs-we build long-term careers. Our apprenticeship program provides a clear path for advancement while giving you the opportunity to learn from experienced utility professionals and build a rewarding career in the electric utility industry.

Wolverine employees enjoy:

  • Structured apprenticeship program with defined progression opportunities
  • Competitive wages
  • Pension plan
  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Zero-cost medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Health Savings Account (HSA)
  • Life, short-term, and long-term disability insurance
  • Generous paid time off and holidays
  • Ongoing training and professional development opportunities
  • A supportive, safety-driven culture grounded in teamwork and service

Headquartered in Cadillac, Michigan, Wolverine Power Cooperative is a not-for-profit generation and transmission cooperative owned by eight member cooperatives across the state. Together, we serve more than 300,000 homes, farms, and businesses with reliable, affordable power every day.

If you're ready to build a career that makes a difference and help power Michigan's future, we'd love to hear from you.

*Journeyman Linemen will also be considered.

Studies show that individuals from underrepresented groups, including women and people of color, often hesitate to apply for jobs unless they meet every qualification. At Wolverine, we are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. If you're passionate about this role but don't meet every qualification, we still encourage you to apply. Your unique experiences and perspectives are what help us grow stronger as a team.

Wolverine actively seeks a diverse workforce and ensures that all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, national origin, disability, veteran status, age, marital status, pregnancy status, genetic disposition, or any other legally protected status.
