What does a full time piping designer do?

A Full Time Piping Designer is responsible for creating detailed drawings and layouts of piping systems used in industries such as oil and gas, chemical plants, and power generation facilities. They use specialized software to design piping routes, specify materials, and ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. Their work supports engineers and project managers in constructing efficient and safe piping infrastructures. Piping designers often collaborate with other disciplines, such as structural and mechanical teams, to integrate piping systems into larger projects effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time piping designer?

To excel as a Full Time Piping Designer, you need a solid grasp of engineering principles, piping layout standards, and proficiency with technical drawings, often supported by a relevant engineering degree or diploma. Expertise in CAD software such as AutoCAD Plant 3D or SmartPlant, and familiarity with industry codes and standards, are typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These abilities are vital for producing accurate, safe, and efficient piping designs that meet project specifications and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges full time piping designers face when coordinating with multidisciplinary teams on large projects?

Full Time Piping Designers often work closely with engineers, architects, and construction teams, which can present challenges such as aligning design specifications, managing revisions, and meeting tight deadlines. Effective communication and adaptability are crucial, as piping designs must integrate seamlessly with structural, mechanical, and electrical systems. Staying organized and proactive in addressing design conflicts or changes helps ensure project milestones are met and reduces the risk of costly rework.

What is the difference between Full Time Piping Designer vs Part Time Piping Designer?

AspectFull Time Piping DesignerPart Time Piping Designer
CredentialsTypically requires a diploma or degree in piping design or related fieldSame credentials as full-time, but may have less formal education or experience
Work EnvironmentFull-time employment in engineering firms, construction sites, or industrial plantsFlexible hours, often freelance or project-based work
Industry UsageCommon in large projects requiring dedicated design teamsUsed for smaller projects or supplemental work

Full Time Piping Designers usually work in a dedicated, full-time capacity within engineering or construction companies, focusing on comprehensive piping systems. Part Time Piping Designers often work on a flexible or freelance basis, supporting specific projects. The main difference lies in employment status and work commitment, with full-time roles offering more stability and consistent hours.

Job description

Job Type
Full-time
Description
Fervo Energy is the world's leading developer of enhanced geothermal systems, deploying directional drilling, fiber optic sensing, and advanced well completions to deliver firm, 24/7 carbon-free power. Fervo is scaling rapidly across the U.S. to meet growing demand from utilities, industrials, and data centers for clean, dispatchable electricity.
Fervo's geothermal power plants rely on complex brine and process piping systems to move high-temperature fluid from wells to power conversion equipment and back. The Piping Designer is responsible for the detailed design of these systems - including large-diameter brine routing, piping layout, and isometric drawing production - supporting Fervo's active project deployments and EPC coordination.
This is a senior individual contributor role for an experienced piping designer who has routed large-diameter systems in industrial or power generation environments. You will own piping design deliverables for plant piping systems - developing routing solutions, producing isometrics, and coordinating with civil, mechanical, and process engineers to deliver complete, constructable design packages.
Brine systems present unique routing challenges: large pipe diameters, high temperatures, site constraints, and the need for creative, cost-effective solutions. This role is for someone who has solved these problems before and brings the experience and judgment to do it again in a fast-moving environment with limited margin for rework.
The right candidate works independently, interfaces with EPC partners effectively, and helps develop internal standards.
Requirements
Responsibilities
Piping Design
  • Develop piping routing layouts, isometrics, and support drawings for large-diameter brine and process piping systems
  • Produce detailed piping design packages from P&IDs, equipment layouts, and process engineering inputs
  • Develop and maintain line lists, piping material specifications, and supporting documentation
  • Incorporate field markups and design changes accurately and efficiently

EPC and Vendor Coordination
  • Interface with EPC partners on piping design deliverables, design reviews, and field coordination
  • Review EPC piping submittals for compliance with Fervo's design standards and project requirements
  • Participate in model reviews and constructability assessments

Standards Development
  • Contribute to the development of Fervo's internal piping design standards and material specifications
  • Support as-built documentation and project closeout activities

Qualifications
Required
  • Associate's degree or higher in Piping Design, Engineering Technology, or related discipline; or equivalent professional experience
  • 7+ years of piping design experience in power generation, geothermal, oil and gas, or industrial environments
  • Experience with large-diameter piping systems (6-inch and above)
  • Proficiency in Plant3D, PDMS, or AutoCAD
  • Demonstrated ability to produce complete piping design packages independently

Preferred
  • Experience with brine, geothermal fluid, or high-temperature water systems
  • Familiarity with ASME B31.1 or B31.3 piping codes
  • Experience coordinating piping design with EPC contractors in an owner's engineer capacity
  • Isometric drawing production experience and familiarity with stress analysis inputs
