The Opportunity

BioMarin is seeking candidates for an Intellectual Property Paralegal to work with our dynamic IP team of attorneys, patent agents, and paralegals. We are looking for a proactive, detail-oriented individual with interest in helping lead the evolution of our IP practice as BioMarin grows. This candidate is highly organized, self-motivated and enjoys working closely with internal and external partners to make an impact. This candidate has excellent communication skills, and the ability to assess competing demands and prioritize appropriately in view of deadlines. The candidate must be proficient with current technology and tools required to carry out critical job functions and will seek opportunities to apply new technology (including AI) to increase the efficiency of our IP team practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain all aspects of intellectual property docketing and file management.
  • Track and monitor due dates for intellectual property related annuities and renewals including coordinating with attorneys, instructing vendors, and confirming payments.
  • Communicate with outside counsel to ensure timely receipt of documents and accuracy of docketing.
  • Prepare and proofread filing receipts, assignments, declarations, and other formal documents.
  • Work collaboratively within the paralegal team and with IP practitioners to effectively manage these responsibilities, and special projects as the need arises.
  • Periodic administrative support for the Vice President, Head of Intellectual Property and the IP Team.

Skills

  • 3 to 5 years of patent paralegal experience in patent prosecution and management; experience with biotech or pharmaceutical patents strongly preferred.
  • Experience handling patent annuities and renewals including tracking/monitoring due dates.
  • Experience with electronic IP docketing and annuity management systems.
  • Familiarity with the USPTO e-filing system
  • Skilled using document and email management applications and databases, preferably including Outlook, SharePoint, and iManage. Willingness to learn new systems.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Education

  • Associate, B.A., or B.S. degree is preferred.
