Description
NYU Dentistry invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. Founded in 1939, the department is one of the oldest and most distinguished pediatric dentistry programs in the United States, with a longstanding commitment to excellence in education, research, clinical care, and community service.
The Chair will provide visionary leadership for a comprehensive academic and clinical program dedicated to advancing pediatric oral health from infancy through adolescence. The department emphasizes health promotion, disease prevention, and equitable access to care, serving more than 5,000 children annually through clinics and extensive community outreach initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic, academic, and administrative leadership for the Department of Pediatric Dentistry.
  • Oversee predoctoral pediatric dentistry education for approximately 1,900 DDS students and direct the 24-month Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry residency program across multiple sites.
  • Lead faculty recruitment, development, mentorship, and scholarly productivity.
  • Advance nationally recognized research programs in pediatric oral health, including securing external funding from NIH, HRSA, and other agencies.
  • Oversee clinical operations delivering comprehensive, evidence-based pediatric dental care, including services for patients with special health care needs.
  • Promote innovation in education, clinical care, and technology, including digital dentistry, telehealth, and advanced behavior management techniques.
  • Direct extensive community outreach and public health initiatives addressing oral health disparities and prevention.
  • Foster interdisciplinary collaboration across dental and medical specialties and represent NYU Dentistry in national and international professional organizations.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for the rank of Associate Professor is $135K - $225K & for the rank of Professor is $165K - $265K. The position will provide additional compensation for serving as Chair of the Department. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
Qualifications
Education & Credentials
  • DDS or DMD from an accredited institution (or equivalent).
  • Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from a CODA-accredited program (or equivalent).
  • Board-certified (Diplomate) of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
  • Eligible for licensure and able to maintain an active dental license in New York State.
  • Advanced degree (PhD, MPH, MS, or equivalent) strongly preferred.

Experience & Leadership
  • Minimum of 10 years of academic pediatric dentistry experience with progressive leadership responsibility.
  • Demonstrated success leading complex educational, clinical, and residency training programs.
  • Strong record of research program development and external funding (NIH, HRSA, or comparable).
  • Experience with community outreach, public health initiatives, and care for underserved and special needs populations.
  • Proven ability to mentor faculty and trainees and foster academic excellence.

Leadership Competencies
  • Visionary and collaborative leadership style with the ability to inspire diverse teams.
  • Experience managing large, multi-site academic and clinical programs and departmental budgets.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Candidates must be sensitive to the needs of and possess an interest in working in a broad academic community with different viewpoints and backgrounds.

The successful candidate will be eligible for appointment at the senior faculty rank and will bring a strong record of excellence in pediatric dentistry education, clinical care, research, and service. The successful candidate will join a distinguished institution with nearly 85 years of leadership in pediatric dentistry education, research, and community service. They will have the opportunity to lead one of the nation's largest and most influential pediatric dentistry programs while advancing the health and wellbeing of children throughout New York City and beyond.
