Full Time Pcb Testing information

What is full time PCB testing?

Full Time PCB Testing jobs involve working as a technician or engineer to ensure that printed circuit boards (PCBs) function correctly and meet quality standards. Employees in these roles perform a variety of tests, including visual inspection, functional testing, and troubleshooting of electronic circuits. These positions typically require knowledge of electronic components, proficiency with testing equipment, and the ability to read technical schematics. Full time roles usually offer standard work hours, benefits, and opportunities for career advancement in electronics manufacturing or quality assurance. People in these jobs play a critical part in maintaining product reliability and safety.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time PCB testing technician?

To thrive as a Full Time PCB Testing Technician, you need strong knowledge of electronics, circuit analysis, and troubleshooting, typically supported by a technical diploma or degree in electronics or electrical engineering. Familiarity with testing equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, automated test systems, and relevant industry certifications (like IPC-A-610) is often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are essential soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure accurate diagnosis, efficient repairs, and high-quality standards in PCB manufacturing and testing environments.

What are some common challenges faced in a full-time PCB testing role, and how can they be overcome?

A full-time PCB testing role often involves troubleshooting intricate circuit boards, identifying intermittent faults, and ensuring strict adherence to quality standards. One common challenge is diagnosing subtle issues that may not be immediately visible, such as cold solder joints or micro-cracks, which require a keen eye and methodical testing procedures. Collaboration with design and manufacturing teams is crucial for resolving recurring problems and streamlining the testing process. Staying updated on the latest testing equipment and best practices can also help overcome technical challenges and improve overall efficiency.

What is the difference between Full Time Pcb Testing vs Pcb Assembly Technician?

Job description

Company Description
Job Description
Palm Bay, FL - 100% onsite
Applicants for this position must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Renesas is unable to sponsor applicants for work visas for this position now or in the future. This includes anyone on F1/OPT visas.
We are seeking a motivated entry-level engineering technician to support our radiation effects test team. In this role you will prepare devices and circuit boards for testing and help execute radiation test campaigns, with a primary focus on single event effects (SEE) testing and a secondary focus on high dose rate total ionizing dose (TID) testing. You will work hands-on with test hardware and instrumentation in the lab and travel to external radiation test facilities (gamma, X-ray, proton, and heavy-ion beam sources) to support live test campaigns.
Key Responsibilities
โ€ข Prepare devices under test (DUTs) and printed circuit boards (PCBs) for radiation testing - including soldering, cabling/harnessing, and mounting parts to test fixtures.
โ€ข Set up, verify, and operate electronics lab and test equipment (oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power supplies, electronic loads, signal sources).
โ€ข Execute high dose rate TID testing and single event effects (SEE) testing in accordance with established test plans and procedures.
โ€ข Travel to and support test campaigns at radiation test facilities, including operating tests during scheduled beam time.
โ€ข Monitor devices during irradiation, capture and log test data, and document results in detailed, well-organized test records.
โ€ข Support the development and use of automated test setups and data-acquisition scripts.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
โ€ข Applicants for this position must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Renesas is unable to sponsor applicants for work visas for this position now or in the future. This includes anyone on F1/OPT visas.
โ€ข Associate's degree or 3 years of experience in the field (electronics, electrical engineering technology, or a related technical discipline).
โ€ข Good understanding of basic electronics lab equipment (oscilloscope, digital multimeter, power supplies, electronic load, etc.).
โ€ข Basic soldering skills - through-hole and surface-mount (SMT) work; comfort with fine-pitch rework and inspection under a microscope is a plus.
โ€ข Ability to read and interpret schematics, datasheets, and written test procedures.
โ€ข Strong attention to detail with good record-keeping and documentation habits.
โ€ข Familiarity with ESD-safe handling practices.
โ€ข Ability to work both independently and as part of a small test team, often under time pressure during limited beam time.
Preferred Qualifications
โ€ข Experience with PCB design and layout a plus.
โ€ข Exposure to or coursework in radiation effects concepts (TID, SEE, SEU, SEL, SEB, SEGR, LET, cross-section, fluence/flux).
โ€ข Basic programming / scripting for test automation and instrument control (e.g., Python, LabVIEW, GPIB/SCPI).
โ€ข Experience programming or exercising microcontrollers or FPGAs to operate a DUT during testing.
โ€ข Familiarity with relevant test standards (e.g., MIL-STD-883 Method 1019 for TID; ASTM F1192 / JESD57 for SEE).
โ€ข Experience with device decapsulation / delidding or other die-exposure techniques.
โ€ข Prior experience in aerospace, defense, space, or high-reliability electronics environments.
Travel & Schedule
โ€ข Ability to travel on approximately 8 trips per year with a typical duration of 6-10 days per trip. Will require odd work hours including overnight and weekends.
โ€ข Beam time at radiation test facilities is scheduled around the clock and is costly and limited, so testing often runs continuously - flexibility and stamina during these campaigns are essential.
Physical Requirements
โ€ข Ability to lift and transport test equipment and shipping cases (up to ~50 lbs) and to set up equipment at off-site facilities.
โ€ข Comfortable working in laboratory, cleanroom, and accelerator / beamline environments.
