Job description

The CMM Technician is responsible for programming, operating, and maintaining Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) and other precision measurement systems to ensure product conformity to engineering specifications. This role supports new product launches, production validation, and ongoing process control through accurate measurement, data analysis, and reporting.

The position requires strong expertise in CMM programming (Calypso, PC-DMIS), GD&T interpretation, and metrology best practices, with a focus on data integrity and measurement system reliability.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

CMM Programming & Measurement Execution

  • Develop, validate, and maintain CMM programs using Zeiss Calypso software.  PC-DMIS programming is also applicable in certain MPP locations
  • Optimize measurement routines for accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency
  • Program and operate additional metrology equipment (e.g., vision systems such as Keyence, optical comparators, height gauges)
  • Perform first article, in-process, and final inspections
  • Training production personnel to operate the CMM

Metrology & Data Integrity

  • Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and specifications using GD&T principles
  • Ensure measurement methods align with design intent and functional requirements
  • Analyze inspection data and generate clear, accurate reports
  • Maintain measurement traceability and documentation per QMS requirements

Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP/New Product Introduction (NPI) Support

  • Support PPAP activities including dimensional layouts and capability studies
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Quality to define measurement strategies for new parts
  • Assist in development of inspection plans and measurement methods

Measurement System Validation

  • Perform Gauge R&R (MSA) and capability studies (Cp/Cpk, Pp/Ppk)
  • Support calibration activities and ensure compliance with internal and external standards
  • Troubleshoot measurement discrepancies and drive resolution

Continuous Improvement & Problem Solving

  • Identify opportunities to improve inspection efficiency and accuracy
  • Support root cause analysis related to dimensional issues
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to quality and metrology systems

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain CMM programs, inspection records, and measurement documentation
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards (ISO 9001, IATF 16949, ISO 13485 as applicable)
  • Support internal and external audits related to metrology and inspection systems

Miscellaneous

  • Perform other duties within the scope of the Quality/Metrology function as assigned, consistent with training, qualifications, and established job classifications.

Technical Skills

· Proficiency in CMM programming using Calypso (required)

· Experience with PC-DMIS (preferred for particular MPP locations)

· Strong understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5)

· Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and CAD models

· Experience with metrology equipment (CMM, vision systems, hand tools, gauges)

· Knowledge of measurement uncertainty, MSA, and statistical analysis

Software & Tools

· Experience with Minitab or equivalent statistical software

· Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data analysis tools

Analytical & Problem-Solving

· Strong attention to detail and data accuracy

· Ability to troubleshoot measurement and inspection issues

· Logical and structured approach to problem solving

Communication

· Ability to clearly communicate technical measurement results

· Effective collaboration with Engineering, Quality, and Production teams

· Coordinate with the production team to prioritize high priority final inspections while ensuring in-process inspections are completed in a timely manner

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

· Associate’s degree in a STEM field (preferred) (Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Metrology, or similar)

· Minimum 2–5 years of experience in CMM programming and metrology

· Experience supporting PPAP and APQP/NPI activities preferred

· Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

· Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods

· Frequent use of hands for measurement tools and computer work

· Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally

· Work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, heat, and moving equipment
