What is a full time painter?

Full time painters are skilled professionals who work primarily on painting surfaces in residential, commercial, or industrial settings as their main occupation. They prepare surfaces, select appropriate paints or finishes, and apply them using brushes, rollers, or sprayers. Full time painters may also handle minor repairs, surface cleaning, and finishing touches to ensure a high-quality result. They typically work for painting contractors, construction companies, or as independent contractors, and their schedules usually follow standard full-time work hours.

What is the difference between Full Time Painter vs Part Time Painter?

AspectFull Time PainterPart Time Painter
Work HoursTypically 35-40 hours per weekFewer hours, often less than 20 hours per week
CredentialsBasic painting certifications or experienceSame as full-time, but may have less formal training
Work EnvironmentConsistent employment on projects or with a companyFlexible, project-based or seasonal work
Employer UsageCommonly employed by painting companies or contractorsOften self-employed or part of a small team

Full Time Painters work regular hours with consistent employment, often with benefits, while Part Time Painters have flexible schedules with fewer hours. Both roles require similar skills and certifications, but differ mainly in hours and employment stability.

What is an hourly rate for a full time painter?

The hourly rate for a full-time painter typically ranges from $15 to $30, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of the work. Skilled painters with certifications or specialized tools may earn higher wages, and rates can vary based on whether the work is residential or commercial. Most full-time painters work standard hours, often 40 hours per week, with some earning overtime for additional hours.

What type of full time painter makes the most money?

Experienced commercial or industrial painters tend to earn higher wages than residential painters due to the complexity and scale of projects. Specializing in high-demand skills such as decorative finishes, spray painting, or working with hazardous materials can also increase earning potential for full-time painters. Certifications and working in regions with higher living costs may further boost income.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time painter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Painter, you need knowledge of surface preparation, paint application techniques, color matching, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with painting tools, power sprayers, scaffolding, and safety equipment is typically required, and some positions may require OSHA certification. Attention to detail, reliability, and strong communication are important soft skills that set top painters apart. These skills ensure high-quality finishes, minimize errors, and promote safety and satisfaction for clients and employers.

What are some common challenges full-time painters face on the job and how can they be managed?

Full-time painters often encounter challenges such as working in varying weather conditions for exterior jobs, managing exposure to paint fumes and chemicals, and maintaining precision over long hours. Safety is a top priority, so using protective gear and ensuring proper ventilation is essential. Additionally, time management and clear communication with clients and team members help ensure projects stay on schedule and meet quality standards. Staying updated with new painting techniques and products can also help painters deliver better results and advance their careers.

What kind of full time painters make the most money?

Full-time painters who specialize in high-demand areas such as commercial, industrial, or high-end residential projects tend to earn the most. Experienced painters with advanced skills, certifications, or expertise in specialty coatings and decorative finishes can also command higher wages. Additionally, those who own their own businesses or work in regions with higher living costs often have higher earning potential.

Job description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

This role is with the Special Projects Team based in Irvine, CA. Our department is responsible for component, system and full-vehicle prototypes and marketing/show vehicle builds at Rivian. This includes the ability to take almost anything from a sketch or rough concept and turn it into a physical product as quickly as possible. Our group features engineers, program managers, fabricators, technicians, painters, and others focused on efficient design and high-quality, short-duration builds. We support production development and manufacturing through our prototype development, while also supporting the design studio in developing concepts and new paint colors. We also build show cars for all programs, as well as other public-facing marketing builds like the Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Van, and an ambulance for the set of Grey’s Anatomy. You will be responsible for painting and surfacing any of the builds coming through the Special Projects team, ranging from development properties to partnership builds to true show cars.

You will also be responsible for paint color and finish development with the design studio, working collaboratively with designers to create the next Rivian color palette.

Responsibilities
  • Develop paint color and finish concepts, including spray-outs, and use creative judgment to achieve desired color and finish proposals.
  • Create and maintain a color and finish database with formulas, processes, and equipment settings.
  • Prepare and paint surface models and components using materials such as body filler, primer, composites, plastics, and modeling films.
  • Adjust gaps, refine highlights, and color sand/polish surfaces to a show-quality finish.
  • Manage paint workload and deliver projects on schedule.
  • Drive innovation through process improvements and evaluation of new equipment and materials.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional studio/shop environment.
  • Manage inventory and procure tools and supplies through the corporate procurement system.
  • Ensure equipment remains in proper working condition and coordinate required service and repairs.
  • Work collaboratively, support teammates, and follow all corporate health and safety procedures.

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of automotive painting and color development experience
  • Familiar with a variety of automotive paint and latex paint systems (ie. BASF, Axalta, PPG, Sherwin Williams, etc.)
  • Experience using paint measurement equipment such as spectrophotometers, gloss meters, and color scanners
  • Flexibility to occasionally work non-standard hours to ensure time sensitive jobs are completed on time Strong communication, multitasking, & inter-personal skills
  • Basic computer skills (Google suite, Slack, Etc.)

Pay Disclosure
The Hourly Pay Range for this role is $47.33 - $59.16 for California based applicants. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, shift, and organizational needs.

The successful candidate may be eligible for annual performance bonus and equity awards.

We offer a comprehensive package of benefits for full-time and part-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26, including but not limited to paid vacation, paid sick leave, and a competitive portfolio of insurance benefits including life, medical, dental, vision, short-term disability insurance, and long-term disability insurance to eligible employees. You may also have the opportunity to participate in Rivian’s 401(k) Plan and Employee Stock Purchase Program if you meet certain eligibility requirements. Full-time employee coverage is effective on their first day of employment. Part-time employee coverage is effective the first of the month following 90 days of employment.
