Dive Safety Officer Job Description



Position: Dive Safety Officer

Location: Myrtle Beach, SC

Employment Type: Full-time


Position Summary:

The Dive Safety Officer (DSO) is responsible for ensuring the highest standards of safety, training, and operational excellence for all diving activities within the aquarium. This role oversees all aspects of dive safety, diver training, and performance-based dive presentations while ensuring compliance with industry regulations and the aquarium’s safety protocols. The DSO collaborates closely with the Director of Husbandry and the Director of Safety to maintain the integrity of animal habitats during dive shows, animal interactions, and other underwater activities. Additionally, this position manages training and scheduling of all divers to provide an exceptional guest experience.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The Dive Safety Officer’s key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Diver Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure the safest possible dive conditions for all in-water activities.
  • Maintain up-to-date diver records, including medical clearances, certifications, training.
  • Verify diving credentials and certifications through recognized certifying agencies.
  • Evaluate prospective divers' skills in a controlled environment to ensure competency.
  • Enforce compliance with the aquarium's Dive Safety Manual and industry safety regulations.
  • Implement emergency response protocols for dive-related incidents.
  • Maintain accurate records of all dives.

Training & Development

  • Conduct ongoing education and skills development for divers, ensuring adherence to the aquarium’s Dive Training Program.
  • Oversee diver training processes.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and kneel.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.

Qualifications & Experience

  • SCUBA Instructor certification from a recognized agency (PADI, NAUI, SSI, etc.).
  • Proven leadership and team management experience.
  • CPR and First Aid Instructor certification.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
