Job description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

If assigned to Sampling:

  • Performs raw material, bulk product, and packaging component evaluation on all incoming shipments and obtains representative lot samples.
  • Completes necessary documentation and LIMS entries.

If assigned to Processing or Packaging inspection:

  • Performs line clearances.
  • Completes necessary documentation, such as production and quality Batch Production Record (BPR) information, associated current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) forms, and daily activity reports.
  • Reviews documentation (BPR, Machine Activity Logbooks (MAL), Laboratory Testing Worksheets, and other logs and inspection sheets) for accuracy and compliance with cGMPs and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Completes rounds (real time line and documentation audit) throughout the shift.
  • Performs allergen and Adenosine – 5 – Triphosphate (ATP) swabbing on equipment.
  • Performs line inspection checks.
  • Performs Acceptable Quality Limits (AQL) inspections.
  • Performs preliminary investigations of the deviation and QC Hold process.
  • Performs data entry, including LIMS entries and Oracle entries, including Oracle status changes.
  • Performs daily internal audits to ensure compliance with GMPs and SOPs as needed.
  • Communicates problems/out of specification issues to supervisor/lead and operations personnel.
  • Informed and held accountable for food safety and regulatory responsibilities.
  • Identifies and immediately notifies management about actual or potential food safety issues.
  • Resolves food safety issues within their scope of work.
  • Complies with safety and GMP requirements.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school degree or equivalent and a minimum of 1-3 years quality related experience OR equivalent combination of experience and education. Degree in science field helpful.
  • Experience in quality processes, inspection, and GMP environment preferred. 
  • Basic computer skills with Word and Excel required.

PERFORMANCE ABILITY

  • Inspector I will be assigned to work in any area in which he/she has been trained based on the needs of the department on a given day.
  • Performs routine tasks with limited decision making required.
  • Interacts with production and audits production operations in real time.
  • Assists with performing root cause analyses into issues and makes good decisions on corrective actions in a timely manner with some guidance when needed. 
  • Good technical writing skills to assist with holds and deviations.
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently meet quality, safety and efficiency goals.

Ability to use good technical writing skills to close deviations and holds as well as update quality documents. Good verbal communication and listening skills. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, averages, ratios, proportions, and the metric system to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to compare results to specifications to determine if result meets requirements.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions.  Good problem-solving skills required.  Ability to investigate situations and reasons to determine root cause.

Ability to work a flexible schedule, including off shifts and weekends.

The employee must regularly lift, move (in some cases drag items), slide, raise and/or place:

  • Lift up to 50 lbs. from 31 inches, carry for 5 feet and return to 31 inches.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. floor to waist height.
  • Grasp up to 50 lbs. of force.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. and move box 10 inches to side, then back again at 36 inches. (MQ Sampler role only)

  • This position works in all areas of NOW’s manufacturing facilities with direct exposure to ingredients (powders and liquids), mixes, (powders and liquids), equipment, and packaging. Frequently exposed to all of the FDA designated major food allergens (Milk, Eggs, Fish, Crustacean shellfish (e.g. crab, lobster, shrimp), Tree nuts (e.g., almonds, walnuts, pecans), Wheat and Soybeans, except for peanuts.
  • As required, works in a loud area that requires hearing protection and other protective equipment to be worn.
