What is full time nursing?

Full time nursing jobs are positions in healthcare where nurses work a standard number of hours per week, typically ranging from 36 to 40 hours. These roles may involve working in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, or other healthcare settings, and can include a variety of shifts, including nights, weekends, or holidays. Full time nurses are responsible for providing patient care, administering medications, collaborating with other healthcare professionals, and maintaining patient records. They often receive benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off. Full time nursing positions offer job stability and opportunities for career advancement.

What are some common challenges faced by full-time nurses, and how can they be managed effectively?

Full-time nurses often encounter challenges such as managing high patient loads, adapting to fast-paced environments, and dealing with emotionally demanding situations. Effective time management, strong teamwork, and regular self-care are essential for coping with these demands. Many healthcare facilities offer support systems like mentorship programs and access to mental health resources to help nurses maintain their well-being and job satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full-time nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a full-time nurse, you need a solid foundation in clinical nursing skills, patient care, and a valid nursing license such as RN or LPN, typically earned through accredited nursing programs. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, medication administration tools, and other hospital technologies is essential. Outstanding communication, empathy, and adaptability help nurses connect with patients and collaborate effectively with healthcare teams. These skills ensure safe, high-quality patient care and smooth operations in fast-paced healthcare environments.

What is the difference between Full Time Nursing vs Part Time Nursing?

Schedule FlexibilityLess flexible, fixed scheduleMore flexible, adjustable hours
BenefitsUsually includes health insurance, paid time offLimited or no benefits

Full Time Nursing involves working standard hours with comprehensive benefits and greater job stability, making it ideal for those seeking consistent employment. Part Time Nursing offers more schedule flexibility but typically comes with fewer benefits and less job security. The choice depends on your work-life balance preferences and financial needs.

What can I do with a full time nursing degree to make a lot of money?

With a full-time nursing degree, pursuing advanced roles such as nurse anesthetist, nurse practitioner, or clinical nurse specialist can significantly increase earning potential. These positions often require additional certifications and specialized training but offer higher salaries compared to entry-level nursing roles. Working in specialized fields like critical care, anesthesia, or management can also lead to higher income.

Your Mission

As a Registered Nurse serving remote First Nations communities in Alberta, you will play a vital role in delivering holistic, culturally competent care within an expanded scope of practice. This position involves assessing patients of all ages with diverse health needs, using critical thinking and evidence-based guidelines to develop and implement care plans. You'll collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, and interdisciplinary teams to provide primary care services, including newborn deliveries, acute illness treatment, and chronic care follow-ups. Beyond clinical duties, you'll educate, counsel, and advocate for patients while ensuring their physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being. In this dynamic environment, you'll manage urgent situations, coordinate medical evacuations when necessary, and maintain accurate documentation-all while making a meaningful impact in underserved communities.

How You'll Contribute

As a Registered Nurse, you'll make a lasting impact by delivering exceptional, culturally competent care to remote and isolated First Nations communities in Alberta. This role offers the chance to practice at the top of your scope, collaborate with a dedicated team, and provide meaningful care across all stages of life:

  • Deliver holistic, culturally sensitive community care tailored to the unique needs of remote and/or isolated First Nations communities.
  • Provide ethical, high-quality care to patients of all ages and acuity levels-from neonates and pediatrics to adolescents, adults, and the elderly.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals, including registered nurses, charge nurses, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members, to ensure safe, effective care within your scope of practice.
  • Offer specialized services, such as wound care, prenatal care clinics, vaccination support, and chronic care follow-ups, to promote long-term health and wellness.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in accordance with established guidelines to uphold the highest standards of care.

  • Valid International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) certificate.
  • An active driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • 2 years of full-time nursing in the last five years in the emergency room, intensive care unit, or as a community health nurse in a remote/rural area.
  • Additional critical care nursing experience (cardiovascular intensive care unit, post-anesthesia unit) is an asset.
  • Alignment with our values of expertise, passion, respect, and care.

Preference for:

  • An elevated level of knowledge and the ability to interpret relevant medical and operational guidelines, protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Collaboration with others to achieve the best results and deliver the most value.
  • Holding others accountable and expecting others to do the same.

By joining International SOS, you will contribute to a global network dedicated to protecting people and organisations. We offer a dynamic and respectful workplace where expertise, innovation, and collaboration drive our success.
