Position Summary
The Student Involvement & Belonging (SIB)/Basic Needs Coordinator creates and supports a holistic student experience, responsible for supporting the vision, initiatives, programs, and daily operations for Portland-Metro students.
In the SIB space, the Coordinator will coordinate Student Involvement & Belonging programs and initiatives, collaborating with partners across the university to ensure a student-centered approach to the creation and implementation of programming that enhances a student's sense of belonging and increases student leadership development and cultural competency.
The Coordinator will use research, data, and assessment to support the development and implementation of a co-curricular journey that enhances students' belonging and leadership development. The Coordinator provides advising and support for Registered Student Organizations and helps to create campus-wide student engagement opportunities, such as large-scale social events, including Music Garden. The Coordinator will support student leadership and cultural competency development, diversity and belonging programming, and support the operations and programming of Student Involvement & Belonging in collaboration with the Assistant Director of SIB (Portland-Metro).
This position also serves as the Portland-Metro campus Benefits Navigator. Through Basic Needs initiatives, this position coordinates trauma-informed case management and direct support to students experiencing housing and food insecurity, mental health challenges, and other barriers to well-being. The Coordinator connects students with local, state, and federal resources, coordinates campus-based basic needs programs, and builds strong, trust-based relationships to empower students through an equity-centered lens.
The SIB/Basic Needs Coordinator works within Portland-Metro Student Services to provide programs and services students need to achieve academic, personal, and professional goals.

  • Bachelor's degree and 1 (one) year of relevant experience in an education setting. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Ability to work, communicate, and collaborate in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings effectively and respectfully.
  • Experience in one or more areas of student services on college campuses (i.e., admissions, housing, student activities, student organization management/ advising, multicultural programming, basic needs, etc.).
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and oral presentation skills.
  • Excellent professional writing skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in higher education institutions, supporting basic needs/ working with government service organizations, event management, and/or driving student engagement through technology.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • One (1) or more years supervising and/or advising student staff.
  • Experience providing state and federal social support services referrals.
  • Experience successfully assisting low-income individuals with Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Aid for Need Families (TANF), SNAP for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) or other similar social safety net programs.
