What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Mechanical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, mathematics, and physics, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), FEA tools, and relevant industry certifications enhances technical proficiency. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively and drive project success. These skills and qualities are vital for designing, analyzing, and implementing mechanical systems that meet safety, efficiency, and client requirements.

How does a Full Time Mechanical Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

As a Full Time Mechanical Engineer, collaboration with cross-functional teams is a key aspect of the role. Engineers frequently work alongside professionals from electrical engineering, manufacturing, procurement, and quality assurance to ensure that designs are practical, cost-effective, and manufacturable. Regular meetings, design reviews, and joint problem-solving sessions are common, particularly during the prototyping and testing phases. Effective communication and openness to feedback are essential for integrating different perspectives and achieving project goals efficiently.

What does a Full Time Mechanical Engineer do?

A Full Time Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical systems and devices, such as engines, machines, and tools. They work on a variety of projects, from developing prototypes to overseeing manufacturing processes. Their work often involves using computer-aided design (CAD) software, analyzing data, collaborating with other engineers or departments, and ensuring products meet safety and quality standards. Mechanical engineers may also be involved in project management, troubleshooting issues, and recommending improvements to existing systems.

What is the difference between Full Time Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Designer?

AspectFull Time Mechanical EngineerMechanical Designer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, possibly PE licenseAssociate's or Bachelor's in Mechanical Design or related field
Work EnvironmentEngineering firms, manufacturing, R&DDesign offices, CAD departments
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across engineering, manufacturing, aerospacePrimarily in product design, manufacturing

Full Time Mechanical Engineers focus on designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical systems, often requiring engineering degrees and licenses. Mechanical Designers concentrate on creating detailed CAD models and drawings, typically with design-focused education. Both roles are essential in manufacturing and engineering industries, but their responsibilities and credentials differ.

IPC Foundry Group - Utah

Job description

This position will be located in Long Island, New York.
About SMC

Superior Motion Control is a precision machine shop and assembly operation based in Farmingdale, NY, supporting the U.S. Department of Defense and major prime contractors. We're a small team with significant responsibility — the parts and assemblies we deliver matter, and so does every engineer on the floor. SMC is part of IPC Foundry Group, and this role plays a key part in growing our engineering capacity for the next generation of programs.

The role

This is a paid summer internship structured as a working tryout for a full-time Mechanical Engineer position. Strong performers convert to full-time at the end of the summer. Both the internship and the full-time role are based on-site in Long Island, NY. You'll come in working alongside our lead engineer, helping us tackle the volume of work. You'll get exposure to real DoD programs from day one and grow into design ownership as you ramp.

What you'll do

Summer internship — focus on vendor packages and drawing work:

  • Compile and refine vendor packages for DoD contracts — drawings, models, specs, certifications
  • Update legacy drawing packages and CAD models to current standards
  • Coordinate with internal teams, vendors, and the shop floor to keep packages accurate and complete

Full-time conversion — responsibilities expand into design and program work:

  • Back up our lead engineer across design, testing, machining, and mechanical assembly
  • Support new program proposals and design work
  • Build and test production and prototype components in our shop
  • Develop and maintain process documentation, work instructions, and engineering standards

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks
  • Solid grasp of GD&T, drawing interpretation, and basic machining processes
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude — comfortable assembling and testing physical components, not just modeling them
  • A self-starter mindset with the ability to navigate ambiguity without stalling out
Nice to have
  • Exposure to a precision machining or job-shop environment
  • Familiarity with DoD or government contracting standards (MIL-specs, AMS, ASME)
  • Electronics experience — not required, but useful
Relocation and logistics

For the summer internship, we provide relocation support to get you to Long Island, including travel and housing assistance during the trial period. Upon conversion to full-time, compensation and benefits will reflect the Long Island market, and you'll be

responsible for your own permanent housing.

Work schedule
  • Full-time, on-site in Long Island, NY
  • Monday–Friday, day shift
Benefits
  • Relocation assistance and housing support during the summer internship
  • Paid time off
  • Health insurance
  • 401(k) with matching
