Job description

Material Specialist
Penn United Technologies, Inc. is looking for a full-time Material Specialist to work in our Carbide facility. In this role, you would support the Laboratory team to ensure efficient workflow, accurate material evaluation and reliable testing processes.
Responsibilities:
  • Support the team with research and development, material preparation, observations, technical insights and information for scheduling, workflow planning and decision-making
  • Help interpret specifications, blueprints, and job requirements for technical clarity
  • Prepare, process, and organize material samples for chemical analysis, external/internal testing, evaluation, failure analysis and audits
  • Conduct material evaluations, testing, approval processes and compliance verification
  • Enter and maintain accurate data in material tracking systems and on required documentation
  • Prepare, set up, adjust, operate and perform preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment
  • Prepare powder work orders
  • Maintain workstation inventory of lab supplies and materials
  • Update MSDS and label incoming chemicals
  • Identify potential quality issues, contribute to root-cause investigations and continuous improvement initiatives

Education / Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Extensive carbide and/or material lab experience
  • Degree in material science, metallurgy or related field, a plus

Required Knowledge and skills
  • Able to effectively follow collaboration efforts from lab manager and coordinator, working well independently and cooperatively with teams
  • Accepting of the responsibility for the direction, control, and planning of activities
  • High degree of accuracy, attention to detail and deadlines
  • Excellent math, mechanical, analyzing and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and understanding of GD&T
  • Capable of comprehending verbal and written directions and procedures
  • Integrate knowledge of lab testing/evaluation processes, company capabilities and customer needs
  • Competent use of measurement tools
  • Able to quickly learn and use required computer software effectively
  • Excellent organizational skills, self-motivated, able to effectively manage multiple tasks
  • Strong ability to professionally communicate using both verbal and written skills
  • Able to work daylight shift M-F with flexibility for occasional half-day on Saturday, as needed
