Material Science Co-Op
As a Materials Science/Metallurgical Engineering Co-op, you support our Corporate Materials Engineer in materials testing and identification, failure analysis, and mechanical integrity; you primarily focus on helping to identify appropriate materials of construction for new chemical manufacturing processes, while also contributing to failure analysis of existing equipment and piping; you are based in Saint Louis (Chesterfield) and collaborate with colleagues across sites in the USA and South America to strengthen safe, reliable, and cost-effective manufacturing operations.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibilities of this role are to:
  • Support efforts to identify appropriate materials of construction for new chemical manufacturing processes and for existing equipment and piping;
  • Conduct materials literature searches and analyze existing material applications to inform material selection;
  • Set up corrosion coupons in the lab, analyze results, and translate findings into clear recommendations;
  • Contribute to materials of construction recommendations based on testing results, process conditions, and available economic data;
  • Perform failure analysis testing in the lab, document observations, and support preparation of clear, data-driven reports;
  • Help develop and refine Mechanical Integrity programs for existing manufacturing processes in close collaboration with site teams;
  • Work closely with Corporate Materials Engineers, Reliability and Integrity Management Engineers, and manufacturing sites to drive cross-functional solutions and support field investigations that may require travel.

WHO YOU ARE
Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:
Required Qualifications:
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related Engineering discipline;
  • Must have completed at least 1 year of a Bachelor's program;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly;
  • Good problem-solving skills and a high degree of personal initiative in a laboratory and plant environment;
  • Excellent organization and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities;
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and within a diverse, cross-site culture;

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale;
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and how materials performance impacts safety, reliability, and cost;
  • Experience in corrosion testing or failure analysis through coursework, labs, or prior internships.

Employees can expect to be paid a salary of approximately between $26.00 to $31.50. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc.. This salary (or salary range) is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant's location, market data/ranges, an applicant's skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
