Sarah Lawrence College believes exceptional writing is one of the most powerful tools in marketing and communications. This position reflects our commitment to investing in talented writers and giving them the opportunity to practice their craft across a wide variety of channels and audiences.
We're looking for a versatile marketing writer who is curious, collaborative, and eager to help tell the stories that define our community. You'll write across a broad range of projects - from digital advertising and fundraising emails to admission materials, website copy, feature stories, and newsletters - working in tandem with designers, photographers, videographers, strategists, and campus partners to create communications that advance the College's mission.
This is a role for someone who enjoys the challenge of understanding audiences, shaping messages, and finding the clearest, most compelling way to communicate the value of a Sarah Lawrence education.

Essential Duties Summary
Responsibilities
  • Write compelling copy for digital advertising campaigns.
  • Develop fundraising emails, donor communications, and campaign messaging.
  • Write admission marketing materials, including print and digital communications.
  • Write and edit website copy supporting enrollment, advancement, and institutional priorities.
  • Produce news stories, feature articles, profiles, and other editorial content.
  • Write newsletters and email communications for a variety of audiences, including students, parents, and alumni.
  • Interview students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other members of the College community.
  • Collaborate with designers, photographers, videographers, and marketing strategists to develop integrated campaigns.
  • Adapt tone, voice, and messaging for different audiences, goals, and communication channels.
  • Revise work thoughtfully based on feedback, strategy, and editorial review.
  • Help maintain the College's brand voice and editorial standards across communications.
  • Maintain SLC's editorial style guide; edit and proofread content using AP Style.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Intellectual curiosity and the ability to learn unfamiliar subjects quickly.

  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple writing assignments simultaneously.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to receive and incorporate feedback.
  • Comfort using AI and other emerging tools thoughtfully to support research, brainstorming, editing, and productivity while exercising independent judgment and maintaining a distinctive human voice.
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in communications, marketing, journalism, English, or a related field.

  • Two or more years of professional writing experience, although exceptional portfolios reflecting other paths will be considered.
  • Professional writing experience in higher education, nonprofit organizations, journalism, agencies, or other mission-driven settings.
  • Experience writing for websites, email marketing, digital advertising, and print communications.
  • Familiarity with content management systems and email marketing platforms.
  • Understanding of SEO and writing for digital audiences.

Samples may be excerpts from longer works, and collaborative work is welcome if the applicant briefly describes their contribution.
Finalists may be invited to complete one brief take-home exercise, designed to take no more than 60 minutes, to help the hiring team understand how they approach a typical assignment for this role. The exercise will be limited in scope and is not intended for publication or other use by the College.
