Job Description:
NOTE: This role is based in New York City and encourages a minimum of two days per week in the SoHo office. Some roles or teams may require additional in-office attendance if the essential functions of the role require it.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Senior Editor of SuperSTEM will be an integral part of the magazine's editorial team. They will support the editorial director for all matters pertaining to SuperSTEM with the ability to step in on high-level tasks as needed. They will write feature articles, edit freelanced articles, oversee multiple recurring departments with minimal oversight, ideate and edit teacher resources that will accompany the student edition, craft digital materials such as video scripts and e-newsletters, and assist others on the team as needed.
The Senior Editor of SuperSTEM will be a highly organized individual who has a keen attention to detail. This is a highly collaborative work environment; the right candidate will be eager to join in discussions and brainstorming sessions in group settings with coworkers both in-person and via Microsoft Teams. They will also work closely with the editors of Scholastic's other STEAM magazines to ensure that our STEAM titles have a shared strategy and cohesive messaging.
This is a wonderful opportunity for a science-savvy writer/educator to join the world's largest children's publisher and help thousands of students nationwide develop a life-long interest in STEM learning.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Be a self-directed, high-level contributer to the editorial process from ideation to publication for student- and teacher-facing materials, both print and digital, for SuperSTEM.
  • Work with the Education Editor to align content with NGSS and state science standards and with the whole team to conceive of multidisciplinary STEM packages-lesson plans, activity sheets, hands-on experiments, slideshows-that fulfill our product promises.
  • Write video scripts as assigned, record videos of experiments, produce slideshows, assist in digital STEM games ideation, and collaborate with the Education Editor and the Editorial Director to schedule, draft, and release e-newsletters for SuperSTEM.
  • Write one or more feature articles per issue and have full ownership: conduct interviews, write and revise copy, input fact check changes, input copy edits, work with art director to finesse layouts for editor's approval, give article its final read. Ideate and edit teacher resources that will accompany article.
  • Manage assigning and editing of student edition articles in collaboration with the Editorial Director. This entails assigning, requesting photos, editing copy, inputting copy edits, doing final reads, and submitting invoices for approval.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to SuperSTEM's associate editor and contributing writers in article framing, tone, and voice for stylistic consistency and to ensure maximum engagement, comprehension, and accessiblity for students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of core science areas and a passion for science education
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Knowledge of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
  • An understanding of what science topics will interest kids and an ability to frame stories in engaging and exciting ways
  • Ability to conduct interviews with scientists and interpret their research in a way that kids will understand
  • Comfort and ease talking with kids and young adults (and their parents) for content featuring young people making an impact in STEM
  • Knowledge of Word, Google docs, Google slides, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of Adobe InCopy a plus.

Experience and Education:
Experience: The ideal candidate will have significant experience writing and editing science articles and will have teaching experience.
