POSITION OVERVIEW

The Math Teacher is responsible for teaching in-person mathematics courses that support adult learners in preparing for and passing High School Equivalency exams (GED or National External Diploma Program) and in developing the quantitative skills needed for postsecondary education and career pathways. Instruction may span multiple levels of math, from foundational numeracy through algebra, geometry, data analysis, and problem-solving. The teacher designs and delivers lessons that strengthen skills in number sense, operations, fractions, decimals, algebraic reasoning, and statistics, while ensuring instruction is equitable, inclusive, and responsive to diverse adult learners. The Math Teacher creates a supportive classroom environment that fosters active learning, builds confidence, and equips learners with the strategies necessary to succeed on standardized assessments and apply math skills in real-world contexts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
INSTRUCTION AND SUPPORT FOR ADULT LEARNERS
  • Teach mathematics courses across Levels 1-5, which may include:
  • Level 1: Foundational numeracy, whole numbers, basic operations, and simple fractions
  • Level 2: Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, measurement, and introduction to integers
  • Level 3: Pre-algebra concepts including order of operations, equations, inequalities, and basic geometry
  • Level 4: Algebra, geometry, data interpretation, and probability aligned with GED readiness
  • Level 5: Advanced GED-level mathematical reasoning including functions, systems of equations, polynomials, advanced data analysis, and application of math to postsecondary and workforce contexts
  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans aligned with state standards and GED testing requirements.
  • Provide differentiated instruction and adapt curriculum to meet diverse learning styles and levels.
  • Assess learner progress regularly and use data to inform instruction and intervention.
  • Incorporate technology and real-world problem solving into daily instruction.
  • Coordinate lesson plans and collaborate with other teachers to maximize learner success and cross-subject integration.
  • Create an equitable and inclusive classroom environment that fosters learner confidence and persistence.
PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION AND COLLABORATION
  • Maintain accurate attendance, grading, and assessment records.
  • Coordinate with Student Support Services to ensure learners have access to wraparound supports that affect academic success.
  • Provide direction to volunteer tutors or co-teachers supporting math instruction.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional learning circles, and peer coaching to strengthen instructional practices.
  • Support intake, seminar, and outreach efforts as needed and able.
PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
  • Engage in ongoing professional development related to adult education, math instruction, and culturally responsive teaching.
  • Stay current with GED testing requirements and math curriculum standards.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Secondary Education with a concentration in Math, Adult Education, or a related field required; master's degree preferred.
  • Experience with Common Core and/or College and Career Readiness Standards for Adults.
  • Experience teaching mathematics for the GED and/or at the high school level.
  • Familiarity with CASAS and Accuplacer.
  • Strong cultural competency skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Experience working with adult learners with special needs is a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong computer skills.
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills.
