Senior Control Systems & Security Engineer

Position Overview

An established utility and infrastructure organization is seeking a Senior Control Systems Engineer to support and enhance mission-critical operational technology (OT) and industrial control system environments. This role is responsible for the design, administration, cybersecurity, and continuous improvement of highly available control system infrastructure supporting real-time operations.

The ideal candidate will provide technical leadership across networked control systems, virtualization platforms, cybersecurity technologies, and operational support processes while ensuring compliance with applicable reliability and cybersecurity standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the administration, configuration, and lifecycle management of operational technology infrastructure, including firewalls, servers, virtualization platforms, network equipment, storage systems, and engineering workstations.
  • Design, implement, and support cybersecurity solutions for industrial control system environments, including intrusion detection, endpoint protection, identity management, vulnerability management, secure remote access, and multifactor authentication technologies.
  • Develop and maintain monitoring, alerting, backup, and recovery solutions to ensure the reliability and resiliency of critical operational systems.
  • Support cyber incident detection, response, recovery, and continuous improvement initiatives for control system environments.
  • Ensure operational technology systems and procedures comply with applicable cybersecurity, reliability, and regulatory requirements, including industry standards governing critical infrastructure environments.
  • Create and maintain automation tools, scripts, procedures, and operational documentation to improve system consistency, efficiency, and repeatability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex network communications, telemetry, and system integration issues using diagnostic and packet analysis tools.
  • Coordinate and support system upgrades, firmware updates, patch management activities, configuration testing, and change management processes.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, standard operating procedures, recovery procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Collaborate with vendors, contractors, and internal stakeholders to support procurement activities, infrastructure projects, and operational initiatives.
  • Lead infrastructure modernization and capital improvement efforts related to energy management, generation management, and industrial control system environments.
  • Provide technical oversight and guidance for system architecture, engineering changes, and operational technology integrations to ensure alignment with security, reliability, and performance objectives.
  • Serve as a technical mentor and subject matter expert for engineering and operational support teams, providing leadership on complex technical initiatives and high-impact projects.
  • Support compliance reporting activities by collecting, validating, and maintaining evidence related to cybersecurity and operational reliability requirements.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to support system optimization, infrastructure resiliency, and long-term technology planning initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of experience supporting critical infrastructure, industrial control systems, operational technology, or enterprise infrastructure environments.
  • At least three (3) years of experience working within regulated environments involving critical infrastructure cybersecurity or reliability compliance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous technical leadership, supervisory, or project lead experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent industry certifications.
  • Experience supporting utility, energy, manufacturing, or other highly regulated operational environments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of industrial control systems, operational technology networks, and cybersecurity best practices.
  • Familiarity with industry regulatory frameworks and standards related to critical infrastructure protection and system reliability.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies, Windows server administration, networking, storage systems, and cybersecurity platforms.
  • Knowledge of scripting, automation, and system integration concepts used to improve operational efficiency and consistency.
  • Ability to analyze complex technical issues, develop effective solutions, and communicate recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, project coordination, and time management skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and related engineering or infrastructure support tools.
